Campaign Organizer – Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) – Chicago, IL

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation’s most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 1.4 million members and online activists to protect the planet’s wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America’s bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations; our water enforcement cases played a major role shaping current water policy throughout the country. Today, our staff of more than 450 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy and communications experts, and others, work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Bozeman, Montana and Beijing.

Position Summary:

NRDC is seeking a Campaign Organizer based in Ohio to join the Midwest Program team to help advance NRDC’s climate and clean energy goals. This is a temporary contract position starting immediately and continuing for 365 thereafter, with possibility of contract extension beyond that. S/he will be responsible for developing strong working relationships with community, business and local political leaders and organizations in Ohio, and representing NRDC when necessary. The organizer must live in Ohio and have strong existing relationships within the state.

Responsibilities:

Help draft and implement strategy to advance our policy agenda by identifying and building relationships with key regional influencers;
Maintain a consistent dialogue with influencers to ensure an ongoing rapport;
Work with the Associate Campaign Director, Ohio State Advocate, and Partnership Engagement staff to help bridge connections into the main NRDC staff by setting up and staffing in-person meetings for fly-in staff;
Educate new partners about NRDC’s agenda and plans for their engagement;
Prepare written reports to summarize activities and progress; and
Supervise volunteers and interns.

Qualifications:

Currently reside in Ohio;
4-year college degree required;
Applicants should have at least 5 years of experience doing advocacy or political organizing, 3 years or more of which are in Ohio;
A strong network of Ohio relationship is required;
A successful applicant must be flexible, have a positive disposition, and be a team player;
Political analytical and strategic skills are required;
Willingness and ability to travel;
Strong organizational skills, strategic planning, self-motivation and communication skills are essential;
Must own or have reliable access to a car;
Experience in, and knowledge of, politics is required;
Experience in, and knowledge of, climate issues is preferred;
The successful candidate must also be able to take initiative and work well independently; and
Strong coordination skills will be necessary for success.
