Community Organizer – SF Housing Action Coalition – San Francisco, CA

The SF Housing Action Coalition (SFHAC) advocates for well-designed, well-located housing for ALL levels of affordability in San Francisco. SFHAC is a small, but mighty, civic engagement non-profit, with a 16-year history. Over 300 business and individual members work together to increase the City’s supply of housing. We believe more housing means more choices and better solutions for all San Franciscans now and in the future.

The SF Housing Action Coalition is hiring a full-time Community Organizer to identify and motivate San Franciscans to join the housing conversation. By amplifying individual voices in support of building new housing, we can change the dialogue to address the housing affordability crisis.

The Community Organizer will gain first-hand experience on the ins-and-outs of local housing policy and decision-making in San Francisco. This is a terrific opportunity for a candidate with stellar interpersonal and communication skills, keen interest in neighborhood- and coalition-building and a strong belief in building new housing – at all levels of affordability – in San Francisco. The Community Organizer should have a good understanding of San Francisco politics and how to best leverage neighborhood interest into political action and advocacy. This is a full-time position that often involved night meetings and weekend outreach events.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Mobilize individuals through grassroots outreach to become local advocates for new housing in their neighborhoods
Educate residents on San Francisco housing policy, legislation and projects through workshops and communications
Empower individuals, residents, families, and local businesses to speak up for new housing in their neighborhoods
Identify new partners and cultivate relationships for greater outreach into communities.
Write and publish community-focused-communications (including emails, blog posts, editorials, action alerts and social media)
Manage easy-to-use tools for neighbors to express their support to the Planning Commission, Board of Supervisors and other local decision makers
Train and develop grassroots community leaders to take action and lead local campaigns

Required Skills

Works well independently & with small teams
Passion for making San Francisco a city that delivers housing at all levels of affordability
Solid understanding of San Francisco land use, politics and history
Skilled at listening in order to understand neighborhood needs
Good organizational skills
Experience in giving presentations and conducting trainings
Excellent communicator and story teller, both written and verbal
Flexible, creative thinker, experience with political analysis desired
Confident public speaker
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from diverse racial, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Level-headed, upbeat and compassionate to neighbors needs
Must be able to attend early morning and evening meetings as well as weekend events
Ability to move easily around the city to attend meetings and neighborhood outreach
