Director of Programs, Entertainment Media – GLAAD – Los Angeles, CA

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Vice President of Programs, the Director of Programs, Entertainment Media is responsible for the ongoing development, implementation and evaluation of GLAAD’s media advocacy and response work within the entertainment industry, including all entertainment projects of interest to the LGBT community, and relationships with entertainment media and industry professionals.

Responsibilities

Execute and develop GLAAD’s goals for promoting LGBT visibility as a means to educate the public on the issues facing the community.
Develop and implement programs and tools to advance GLAAD’s advocacy work in the entertainment industry, including increasing and improving diverse representations of LGBT people.
Initiate and maintain relationships with entertainment industry professionals.
Work in collaboration with the Vice President of Programs and the programs team to identify and develop entertainment strategies relevant to other programmatic work.
Conduct well-messaged interviews and represent GLAAD in print, online and broadcast platforms.
Represent GLAAD at entertainment industry events, meetings, classroom presentations, and other relevant opportunities.
Oversee the production of online editorial content for distribution through GLAAD’s blog and social media channels.
In collaboration with GLAAD’s Director of Communications, serve as a spokesperson for GLAAD in the media and among the public as needed. Compile research and author major reports that generate media and industry interest, as well as advocate for change, such as the annual “GLAAD Studio Responsibility Index” and “Where We Are on TV” diversity study, as well as new research and reporting on international entertainment.
Oversee development and implementation of GLAAD grant program for content creators.
Maintain up-to-date information on entertainment projects (film, television, video games, etc.) of interest to the LGBT community and communicate GLAAD’s position on those projects.
Utilize entertainment industry relationships to facilitate change when issues of concern or defamation occur.
Lead efforts to continue GLAAD’s public education campaign and utilize relationships to distribute GLAAD PSAs in a multi-platform universe.
Monitor current and upcoming LGBT-inclusive television, films, video games, and other forms of entertainment media.
Maintain an up-to-date database of relevant media contacts.
Plan panel discussions and other public educational activities on issues within the entertainment industry of interest to the LGBT community.
Develop statements, blog entries, articles, and op-eds relevant to GLAAD’s entertainment work.
Collaborate across programs areas where appropriate and necessary to meet objectives
Complete other tasks as assigned.
Help to manage LGBT community response to entertainment projects.

Qualifications

Required: Minimum of five years experience in the entertainment industry or entertainment media with demonstrated understanding of television, movies and the script development process.
Required: Bachelor’s degree in media or communication studies, film or television studies, public relations, or qualified related field.
Required: Excellent strategic planning skills.
Required: Excellent professional writing skills.
Required: Excellent public speaking experience.
Required: Visionary and thoughtful with strong strategic skills, excellent analytical/conceptual abilities, and a capacity for innovation.
Preferred: Understanding of historical and current issues concerning the representation of the LGBT community in entertainment media.
Preferred: Understanding of international media markets and presence of American companies within them.
Preferred: Understanding of non-profit organizations.
Ability to understand and create a team budget.
Ability to influence and work with a wide array of personalities.
Experience in crafting or implementing public relations campaigns.
Experience in creating online content and blogs.
Ability to successfully show leadership and supervise a small team made up of staff and/or interns.
Network of entertainment media contacts.
Experience in planning and implementing public (educational) events for members of the entertainment industry.
Experience working with talent and talent representatives.
Experience (professional or volunteer) working within an LGBT organization.
Ability to work well under pressure.

Supervision

The Director of Programs, Entertainment Media reports to the Vice President of Programs and supervises one or more full time positions and interns.

Compensation

Salary is commensurate with experience.
