Director of Social Justice – All Souls Church Unitarian – Washington, DC

The Director of Social Justice will play a key role in the life of All Souls Church. The successful candidate will assist staff members, lay leaders, and congregants who are engaged in the church’s very important social justice work.

The Director of Social Justice will:

Serve as coordinator, staff liaison, and point of contact for the church’s social justice ministry, including, but not limited to:

The Reeb Voting Rights Project**

The Beckner Committee and their internal and external grants program

The Heiwa Peace Pilgrimage Team as they prepare to host visitors from Japan during the 2015-16 church year

Green Souls, the church’s environmental justice initiative

The Criminal Justice Committee**

Our affordable housing ministry

The English as a Second Language program

Train and support social justice leaders, with attention to their spiritual grounding.

Coordinate the church’s annual Thanksgiving Food Drive.

Participate as an active member of the Program Team, which is led by the Chief Program Officer, and includes the Director of Music and Arts, the Interim Director of Children’s Religious Education, the Membership Coordinator, and the Senior Minister, who serves as an ex officio member.

Participate in All Souls Church staff meetings and other staff activities.

Experience in social justice work.

Effective communication skills.

Organizational skills necessary to juggle multiple tasks.

Time management skills necessary to keep commitments and meet deadlines.

Ability to write clearly and persuasively.

Good facilitation skills.

Familiarity with Unitarian Universalism and its seven principles.

Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office suite.

Willingness to provide assistance to fellow staff members in their areas of responsibility, when requested.

A good sense of humor.

Education

A Bachelor’s Degree is required.

Background Screening

Candidate must pass a criminal background check prior to hiring.

Hours and Reporting

This is a 30-hour position that reports to the Chief Program Officer. The church week runs from Sunday through Thursday, with occasional work on Fridays and/or Saturdays. Must be available to meet with lay-led committees and groups on weeknights, as needed.
