Advancing Justice-LA seeks a full-time Project Director for its Democracy Project, to lead the organization’s non-partisan civic engagement efforts focused on Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) voters in California and to shape the organization’s vision for voter engagement efforts in 2016 and beyond. In particular, the Project Director will have primary responsibility for planning and executing Advancing Justice-LA’s “Your Voter Matters” campaign, which partners with AANHPI community organizations to target AANHPI voters in Southern California.
The Democracy Project Director will also help guide Advancing Justice-LA’s broader vision for integrated voter engagement, in collaboration with other senior level staff, increasing the civic engagement of AANHPI community members as well as their influence in decision-making processes that affect their health, social and economic
well-being and their civil rights. The Democracy Project is part of Advancing Justice-LA’s policy strategy area, and will also collaborate with other AANHPI community groups as well as Advancing Justice-LA’s affiliates in other cities. The Democracy Project Director will supervise other staff and volunteers.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Lead and manage Democracy Project in carrying out its electoral goals (e.g., 2016 and 2017 elections) as well as to help shape broader vision for civic engagement throughout the organization (e.g., work with consultants or on specific projects as identified)
Develop and implement a clear strategy to reach, educate and mobilize AANHPI voters in Southern California (“Your Voter Matters” campaign)
Develop and implement integrated voter engagement campaigns around key issues (e.g., health, immigration, education, etc.) in coordination with other Advancing Justice-LA program teams
Develop relationships and collaborate with ethnically and geographically diverse AANHPI community organizations to implement Democracy Project goals, including leading coalitions and managing sub-grants
Work with other voter education and mobilization organizations and projects, especially those that focus on immigrants and communities of color
Supervise Democracy Project staff, interns and other volunteers (currently one other staff member)
Provide training and technical assistance to community partner organizations on voter engagement strategies
Work closely with other Advancing Justice-LA program units whose work intersects with the Democracy Project’s voter engagement goals, such as the Voting Rights Project, Demographic Research Project, Youth and Parent Leadership Project, etc.
Work with the Development team to raise resources to support the Democracy Project’s work (e.g., funder relationships, grant proposals, grant reports) and Advancing Justice-LA more broadly (e.g., annual gala dinner)
Work with the Communications team to increase the influence of Advancing Justice-LA’s voter education and mobilization efforts
Work with other Advancing Justice-LA units as needed (e.g., Pro Bono team for volunteer management)
Work with other Advancing Justice affiliates across the nation as appropriate
Qualifications:
Prior get-out-the vote or political campaign experience, including knowledge of voter database systems (e.g., PDI, VAN )
Prior supervisory and project management experience
Creative, self-directed and motivated
Excellent oral, written and organizational skills
Demonstrated commitment to social justice and civil rights issues
Experience working in diverse coalitions and networks
Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends, as well as occasional in-state travel
Knowledge of or experience working with AANHPI communities preferred
Community organizing experience a plus
Language ability in an Asian or Pacific Islander language a plus
