Families USA, a national, nonprofit advocacy organization dedicated to the achievement of high-quality, affordable health care for all Americans, is seeking a Government Affairs Associate to assist with the implementation of the organization’s legislative strategy.
Duties and Responsibilities
Represent Families USA in meetings with legislative staff and in coalition meetings with national partners
Draft letters, emails, and other correspondence to policymakers to describe our policy positions
Stay up to date on current political and legislative events, keeping staff informed to influence their work
Monitor the Congressional budget process
Conduct a variety of time-limited research projects
Analyze legislative proposals with the support of policy staff
Draft blogs, emails and other informative updates for staff, partners and the public
Provides administrative support to the government affairs department
An ideal applicant would possess these qualifications
Bachelor’s degree (preferably related to political or public affairs) and 2-3 years full-time work experience in government affairs, lobbying, or on Capitol Hill.
Strong analytic and strategic thinking abilities
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Good political judgment
Capable of discussing and conveying complex policy information in a simple manner
Strong people skills
A commitment to social justice
Ability to be flexible, respond to time-sensitive requests, multitask and prioritize work
Knowledge of nonprofit advocacy organizations, Congress, and federal agencies is important
Some knowledge of health care policy is preferred
