Health / Welfare Staff Attorney / Clinical Supervisor – East Bay Community Law Center – Berkeley, CA

The Health & Welfare Practice of the East Bay Community Law Center (EBCLC0 seeks an attorney for a temporary full-time position as a Staff Attorney/Clinical Supervisor to provide legal representation and other legal services to low-income families referred through our medical-legal partnerships and to assist with the training and supervision of law student interns.

EBCLC is a non-profit organization founded in 1988 to provide high quality legal services to low-income clients and educational opportunities for law students and community volunteers. As UC Berkeley Law School’s community-based clinic, EBCLC is currently the largest provider of free legal services for low-income residents in the East Bay, with a staff of 40 and an annual roster of 150 law student interns providing services to 5,000 clients each year.

Primary Responsibilities:

Provide direct legal assistance to clients attending our weekly Public Benefits Clinic and to patients and families referred by our medical partners for assistance with issues including public disability and other income benefits (SSI, SSDI, SDI, GA, CalWORKS, IHSS, CAPI, etc.), access to public and private medical insurance programs (MediCal, MediCare, Covered California), and access to stable, healthy housing (eviction prevention, habitability, security deposits, reasonable accommodations, etc.). Services include intake and screening, direct representation, education, outreach, and policy advocacy.
Assist in supervision of clinical law students performing the above legal services. Supervision duties may include substantive law and skills training, regular individual and group case reviews, and day-to-day supervision of students’ legal work.
Complete administrative tasks, such as those related to grant and services reporting.
Provide periodic legal trainings for medical providers, community partners and client groups.

Minimum Qualifications:

J.D. degree required, California State Bar membership highly desirable.
Bilingual Spanish/English skills preferred.
Prefer at least one year of direct experience representing low-income clients in SSI and other public benefits cases, including administrative law hearings. Familiarity with housing and immigration issues desirable.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse range of individuals, including low-income clients, people of color, people living with HIV/AIDS, people with mental and physical disabilities, law students, and medical and other service providers.
Excellent written and oral advocacy skills.
Demonstrated organizational and administrative skills.
