U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI), a non-governmental, not-for-profit national organization dedicated to addressing the needs and rights of refugees and immigrants, seeks interns to provide support to USCRI’s Immigrant Children’s Legal Program (formerly the National Center for Refugee and Immigrant Children). Our office is located in Crystal City, part of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.
The Immigrant Children’s Legal Program (ICLP) assists undocumented immigrant children ages 0-18 who are in removal proceedings. ICLP screens children for eligibility for legal relief from deportation; recruits and trains volunteer attorneys; and matches children with attorneys. The basic duties of the position along with application procedures are as follows:
Responsibilities
All interns will:
• Conduct hour-long, telephonic intake interviews, mostly in Spanish, with children up to age 18;
• Write memos on each interviewee’s case in English;
• Orient children and their sponsors to the immigration court process; and
• Attend regular brown bag lunches featuring presentations by USCRI staff to gain familiarity with practices and concepts relevant to nonprofit and government organizations assisting immigrants and refugees.
Additional duties handled by individual interns include: staffing a hotline for immigrants; updating the website by posting immigration law news and resources; and maintaining and updating ICLP’s database and assisting with case assignment.
Requirements

• Interns must have strong, advanced, or fluent Spanish speaking/comprehension abilities.
• Interns must have excellent analytical and English language writing skills.
• Preference will be given to interns who can commit 35 hours per week for 10 weeks, but all applicants, including part-time applicants, will be considered.
• Interns must be available to begin on September 8 and continue through December.
Preferred Qualifications
• Familiarity in working with immigrant, refugee, or low-income communities and/or prior experience working with children or children’s issues;
• High level of professionalism;
• Ability to multitask; and
• A sense of humor.
Internships require a minimum of 20 hours per week (interns may not work more than 8 hours per day) and a 10-week commitment. The internship is located at Crystal City-Arlington, VA, 15 minutes from DC.
COMPENSATION:
• Part-time (20-30 hrs. per week): up to $160 stipend per month
• Full-time (30-40): $240 stipend per month
• Local travel expenses to and from the office are also reimbursed, up to a maximum of $20 per day.
