Legislative Advocate – Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) – Washington, DC

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation’s most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 1.4 million members and online activists to protect the planet’s wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America’s bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations; our water enforcement cases played a major role shaping current water policy throughout the country. Today, our staff of more than 450 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy and communications experts, and others, work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Livingston, Montana and Beijing.

Position Summary:

NRDC is seeking a Legislative Advocate to work with the Government Affairs team in our Washington, DC office to increase our presence and effectiveness on Capitol Hill.

Responsibilities:

Advocate NRDC’s federal agenda before Congress.
Work with NRDC programs to help develop their legislative strategy and to implement it.
Prepare materials that will be used to inform and persuade decision-makers on Capitol Hill.
Conduct legislative research.
Respond to inquiries from Capitol Hill.
Help develop and work with coalitions to enhance advocacy before Congress.

Qualifications:

Hill experience, preferably with strong emphasis on environmental issues, or significant experience in other positions that involve working closely with Congress.
Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably with some focus on environment or government.
Strong interpersonal skills and comfort with advocacy.
Excellent written and oral communication abilities.
Legal experience is a plus but not required.

The issue areas that the Legislative Advocate will work on, will take into account the experience of the incumbent and the needs of the Council.
