Job Description: Nutrition Policy Advocate

Oakland, California

Reports to Managing Nutrition Policy Advocate

Duties and Responsibilities

Daily activities generally include research, analysis, writing, speaking, and advocacy with numerous community partners as well as decision makers and administrators at the federal, state, and local levels. More specifically, daily activities may include:

Advocating for increased access to nutritious, affordable food by promoting CFPA’s policy agenda among government agencies and community stakeholders

Analyzing and synthesizing research (or other evidence) to inform proposed and existing policies

Drafting policy memos, fact sheets, and issue papers

Actively representing CFPA at state and local meetings related to legislative and administrative advocacy agendas

Coordinating special projects, including local and statewide educational and advocacy events

Contributing to grant proposals and grant reports

Qualifications

Relevant skills and experience include advocacy, leadership, communication, strategic thinking, and a strong commitment to improving nutrition, health, and well-being for low-income Californians.

Required skills and experience

A Bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years of experience working in human services or advocacy -OR-a graduate degree in a relevant field, such as public policy, public health, social welfare, or nutrition

Excellent written communication skills

Excellent verbal communication skills

Problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills

The ability to work independently, coordinate projects, and respond appropriately to multiple priorities

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software and Internet browsers

Desired skills and experience

Knowledge of nutrition issues affecting low-income populations

Knowledge of nutrition policies and programs at the federal, state, and local levels

Experience working with elected officials and/or administrators in education, health, or human services

Working knowledge of legislative and/or government decision- and budget-making processes

Public speaking experience

Experience with GoogleApps and WordPress
