Summary:

SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania is looking for organizers to work on our hospital, nursing home and home care organizing teams on a project basis.

Description of the Union:

SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania unites 25,000 health care workers from all areas of the health care industry. We are the nurses, caregivers, dietary workers, lab technicians and housekeepers who work in Pennsylvania’s nursing homes, hospitals, home health care agencies, state health facilities and auxiliary health care services.

Together we work to protect patient care, expand access to quality health care for all, and to improve our working conditions. We accomplish these goals by organizing non-union health care workers, driving industry standards in our contracts and fighting for legislation that affects health care in our state.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Organizers perform a wide range of duties focused on empowering workers to stand up for themselves and join with their co-workers to use their strength to win improvements on the job and in society. In a typical campaign, an organizer…

Identifies, recruits, and trains worker leaders to help lead the campaign
Builds and tests union support
Creates positive leadership relationships with worker leaders and activists
Plans and executes large worker actions (delegation, rally, etc.)
Mobilizes workers (house calls, Lobby Day, Meetings)
Utilizes worker power to overcome the anti-union campaign
Inoculates workers against the anti-union campaign
Records conversations, assessments, and assignments
Maintains and updates various campaign lists and systems
Charts and analyses the workforce
Understands the basics of the National Labor Relations Act and other relevant laws and regulations affecting organizing campaigns

Qualifications:

Successful applicants must have excellent communications skills, a willingness to work long and irregular hours, be able to be away from home for significant periods of time, and have the ability work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Given the dynamic nature of union organizing, campaign assignments can be anywhere in Pennsylvania. Depending on experience, the position may begin with a three month apprenticeship program.

Travel:

All positions require a car and willingness to travel and work on the road as required within Pennsylvania. SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania provides mileage reimbursement at the Federal rate and lodging when working away from home.

Competitive salary package and benefits including defined benefit pension (with contributions beginning after six months employment), optional 401K type plan, and fully paid health insurance
