Pacific Environment seeks to protect the living environment of the Pacific Rim by strengthening local community leadership and championing social justice in Russia, China, the Arctic, and elsewhere on the Pacific Rim. With a 28-year history of achievement and a staff of 10, Pacific Environment focuses on marine, energy/climate, and watershed protection issues.

The Position…

Reporting to the Executive Director, the hire will either be at the Director or Manager (Advocate) scale. The Pacific Policy Director/Advocate will provide leadership and management for Pacific Environment initiatives and campaigns. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following issues and geographies:

– marine policy

– energy and climate policy

– rivers and watershed policy

– Russia and other Asian Pacific venues

– international development finance campaigns

There is significant opportunity for the Policy Director/Advocate to expand Pacific Environment’s range of activities in these focal areas. The position’s responsibilities include strategic planning, managing staff, serving as a lead contact for international partners, fundraising with foundations and individuals, and oversight of a program budget.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated achievement, leadership, and management skills relevant to one or more of the thematic and geographic focuses listed above. She or he will also possess excellent communications skills.

This is a salaried, exempt position.
Location, Travel and Hours of Work…

This full-time position is ideally based at Pacific Environment’s San Francisco headquarters, although remote placement elsewhere in the Pacific Rim is possible for the right candidate. The position will require frequent international and domestic travel.

Key Qualifications…

B.A. / B.S. degree or equivalent experience. Advanced degrees and relevant experience are a strong plus.
Demonstrated experience and achievement in strategic advocacy, policy, and campaign work.
Experience in one or more of the policy areas and/or geographies listed above.
Bilingual in English and Russian (or another Asian language) a particular plus.
Demonstrated success in leadership and program management.
Demonstrated success in foundation fundraising. Experience in individual fundraising a plus.
Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal.
Demonstrated success as an effective team player.
Ability to develop strong, constructive relationships with local environmental groups, government agencies, scientists, and community and political leaders in geographies of focus.
Personal commitment to environmental and social justice and, therefore, a strong sense of humor.
