Pro Bono Projects Coordinator – Bay Area Legal Aid – Oakland, CA

Organization: Bay Area Legal Aid’s (BayLegal) mission is to provide high quality legal assistance regardless of a client’s location, language, or disability. BayLegal is the largest provider of free civil legal services to low-income residents of the San Francisco Bay Area, with six regional offices serving seven counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara. BayLegal’s approximately 100 staff members provide wraparound legal services in housing preservation, domestic violence and sexual assault prevention, economic security, consumer protection, and healthcare access.

The Position and Responsibilities: The Pro Bono Projects Coordinator is a key member of the Pro Bono Department, and actively supports the engagement of private attorneys in the delivery of legal services. The Coordinator will participate in planning, evaluation, and delivery of BayLegal’s pro bono programs. The Coordinator will be based in the Oakland office and report to the Pro Bono Counsel. Responsibilities:

Coordinate cases referred to pro bono attorneys

Create and maintain pro bono client files

Develop and streamline processes and procedures

Oversee and participate in pro bono legal clinics

Support engagement of pro bono attorneys for individual client representation and co-counsel in complex litigation

Assist in the development of substantive law trainings to private bar attorneys
Develop recruiting materials
Respond to client and volunteer inquiries
Maintain database of client and volunteer records
Participate in the planning and evaluation of BayLegal’s pro bono programs
Support law clerk recruitment

About the Successful Candidate:

Curious and self-directed with an ability to anticipate what needs to be done
Demonstrated experience envisioning and implementing new projects
Strong organizational, language, and communication skills
Exceptional listener and strategist who can thrive in a collegial environment
Sense of humor and comfortable working in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment
Experience managing volunteers or working in legal services
Fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred
B.A./B.S. required, J.D. optional
