The National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) works to ensure that the nation’s 1-in-5 children, adolescents, and adults with learning and attention issues have every opportunity to succeed in school, work, and life. NCLD provides essential information to parents, professionals, and individuals with learning disabilities, promotes research and programs, and advocates for federal and state policies to protect and strengthen educational rights and opportunities.

Public policy internships take place in our Washington, D.C. office. A position is currently available for summer, 2016. The position is unpaid; however, NCLD will provide reimbursement for travel expenses as well as a $10/day lunch stipend for days with 4 or more hours on site. Internships typically extend from May–early August but arrangements can be made for special circumstances. Internships require a commitment of up to 20 hours per week. NCLD Team members will provide ongoing supervision and mentorship on projects. The program will allow motivated interns to interact with key policymakers and members of the NCLD Team.

Responsibilities

Independently attending policy events, briefings, and Congressional hearings
Conducting basic legislative research
Participating in education and disability-rights coalition meetings
Assisting with NCLD events related to policy and advocacy
And the opportunity to pursue independent research interests and publish blog posts

Qualifications

Commitment to NCLD’s mission
Knowledgeable and passionate about education policy and Congress
Computer skills (Word and Excel)
Writing and web research skills
Positive, flexible, and motivated
Enrollment in a graduate-level program is preferred; bachelor students may also apply
