Public Policy Associate – The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association – Washington, DC

The National Office of The ALS Association is recruiting for a Public Policy Associate. Reporting to the Vice President, Public Policy the successful candidate will assist in implementing The Association’s year round public policy program, including identifying advocates in rural and remote areas, supporting outreach event planning, coordinating the distribution of ALS Registry promotional materials as well as assisting in the day to day activities of the Public Policy department. This position will be based in the national headquarters of The ALS Association in Washington, D.C.

Core duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Working with the Vice President, Public Policy draft responses to legislative and regulatory queries from Chapters and advocates.
Monitor research and analyze legislation and regulations that impacting people with ALS.
Maintain and update advocate database.
Maintain content on internal and external web pages; monitor department email accounts.
Assist with the coordination of all Chapters and Advocates without Chapters for two Capitol Hill Days per year.
Create and develop presentations and review and edit written materials as appropriate.
Attend and summarize meetings on the Hill in addition to coalition meetings and hearings as necessary.
Provide administrative support, including but not limited to special advocacy projects as assigned by the Chief Public Policy Officer.
Convey a professional and positive image that reflects favorably on The ALS Association.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from four year college or university with one to two years related experience preferably on Capitol Hill or government relations or the equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Excellent interpersonal skills and proficient computer and internet research skills are a must.
Experience tracking and monitoring legislation and regulations.
Experience in Capwiz grassroots software is preferred but not necessary.
Detail oriented and strong organizational skills required. Capable of handling diversified assignments and highly adaptable.
The ability to work well in a fast paced environment interfacing with all levels of management and volunteers, as well as Congressional staff and other elected officials.
Excellent written and oral communication skills. Self-starter, requiring little supervision.
