Senior Attorney or Staff Attorney for our Public Lands Program – Center for Biological Diversity – Denver, CO

At the Center for Biological Diversity, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature — to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters and climate that species need to survive.

We want those who come after us to inherit a world where the wild is still alive.

The Center is currently looking for a Senior Attorney or Staff Attorney to join our Public Lands team of attorneys, campaigners and communication specialists who are working to enforce the laws governing federal leasing of fossil fuels. This position will focus on the Federal Fossil Fuels “Keep It In the Ground” Campaign. This is a full-time position with a preferred location of Denver, Colorado.

The position will involve using applicable laws — including the Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Administrative Procedures Act and others — to engage in all phases of federal fossil fuel auctions, plan amendments and projects, including through both administrative advocacy and litigation. The position requires a dynamic, dedicated, organized individual with experience in litigation and with the federal fossil fuel program.

Main duties:

Track, analyze and comment on federal fossil fuel auctions; plan amendments and projects as appropriate.
Litigate federal on shore fossil fuel auctions, plan amendments and projects.
Work with regional, local and national partners.
Work with scientists and other related experts.

Essential qualities, qualifications and skills desired:

At least five years experience as an environmental attorney.
Experience developing strategic litigation and litigating under relevant federal statutes, specifically the ESA, National Environmental Policy Act, Federal Land and Policy Management Act, National Forest Management Act and Administrative Procedure Act.
Experience working collaboratively with peers.
Knowledge of federal laws relating to the federal fossil fuel program.
Knowledge of — or ability to quickly learn about — the biology of and threats to imperiled species.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
Strong organizational skills.
Passion for conserving public lands and wildlife, and for tackling climate change and fossil fuel drilling and overconsumption.

Benefits Package:

Employer paid medical, dental and vision plan.
Employer paid STD and LTD.
403(b) plan with opportunity for match.
Relaxed work atmosphere and dress code.

The Center for Biological Diversity deeply values, and is committed to sustaining and promoting, diversity both in the workplace and the world. We believe there is not only an intrinsic link between protecting the diversity of the Earth’s cultures, languages, plants and animals, but between that work and having a staff diverse in gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity and socioeconomic background. Applicants from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
