The Senior Staff Attorney is responsible for providing children in the Central Kentucky area of the Commonwealth and especially children of disadvantaged populations with high quality legal representation in education, child custody, juvenile justice and other legal matters where children are in need of protection. Primary responsibilities include legal advocacy, research, and policy advocacy. The Senior Staff Attorney’s geographic area of concentration will be in Central Kentucky. The Attorney will primarily focus on educational advocacy cases, juvenile justice policy work, and oversee the administrative functions of our Lexington office. Some travel is required including regular travel to the CLC Main Office in Covington, Kentucky.
Primary Responsibilities:
Oversees administrative needs of the Central Kentucky Office.
Provides extensive representation in local courts, schools and administrative agencies regularly advocating for the rights of children. Provides representation and/or timely accurate information, legal advice, referral, self-help materials, and guidance to those seeking assistance.
Effectively carries out activities of the Children’s Law Center, including overseeing Lexington intake orocedures, working with other agencies, participating in case management meetings, and ensuring that client problems are identified and resolved.
Prepares materials and reports.
Maintains accurate and complete records concerning cases handled.
Maintains supervision, training, and mentoring of law clerks in Lexington office. Advise on legal strategies and client matters, review written materials, and co-counsel cases, as appropriate.
Lead juvenile justice policy activities for CLC.
Qualifications:
Admitted to practice law in the Commonwealth of Kentucky or eligible for limited license.
Experience in advocacy for children and familiarity with systems that serve children.
Minimum 5 years of experience as an attorney and prior managerial experience preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication.
Proven track record of working with a wide-array of professionals and community members from varying backgrounds.
Bilingual Spanish/English preferred
