Position Summary
CCA seeks a full-time Special Projects Manager to serve as a key member of the policy team. The position requires an individual comfortable working in a team setting while also being able to work independently and take initiative. The Special Projects Manager is primarily responsible for securing the development and deployment of zero and near-zero emission freight transportation technology in California. Other responsibilities may include advocating for air quality improvements related to climate change, energy, public transportation, land use, air toxics, cumulative environmental impacts and air pollution emission reduction technologies. The Special Projects Manager reports to and works directly with the Policy Director and is based in downtown Los Angeles. The ideal candidate should be able to work 40 hours a week, including occasional weekends and evenings when needed.
Policy and Advocacy Responsibilities
The Special Projects Manager has two main responsibilities:
Coordinating and supporting the steering committee, workgroups, and general membership of the California Clean Freight Coalition (CFCC). The mission of CCFC is to create transformational changes in the freight transportation system in California in order to protect public health, clean the environment, and promote social justice and equity. CCFC has a diverse statewide membership that includes environmental, public health, social, and environmental justice organizations. The Special Projects Manager assures CCFC’s ongoing progress and accomplishments by scheduling meetings, creating and distributing meeting agendas, reminders, and notes, serving as an information resource for the coalition, maintaining a roster of active CCFC members, and other duties as time permits and directed by the CCFC Steering Committee. The Special Projects Manager also monitors the California Air Resources Board’s sustainable freight program and provides updates to CCFC members.
Supporting the CCA policy team in carrying out program activities and advocacy strategies that lead to cleaner air for allCalifornians. The Special Projects Manager works to protect public health and the environment by advocating for the development and implementation of policies to change the port and freight transportation system to a cleaner, less polluting industry in California.
Other policy and advocacy responsibilities include:
Providing support for statewide and local advocacy efforts.
Establishing, maintaining, managing, and strengthening relationships with diverse stakeholder groups and elected and appointed government officials.
Monitoring legislative and regulatory agencies to identify public participation opportunities and facilitate community stakeholder participation in decision-making processes.
Arranging and leading community forums to raise awareness about air quality issues.
Providing written and oral testimony at public hearings and meetings.
Developing educational, training, and presentation materials.
Conduct media interviews and briefings.
Participating in work groups, coalitions and other collaborative partnerships with allies.
Writing and editing clear and concise comment letters, reports, op-ed articles, social media posts, and other materials.
General Responsibilities
Participate in organization planning and assist with fundraising.
Work occasional evenings and weekends, as necessary.
Some travel required.
Skills, Abilities, and Requirements
Qualified applicants should be able to demonstrate the following skills, abilities, and experience:
Commitment to the mission of CCA.
At least 2 years of work or related experience in campaign or policy development, preferably on air quality or other environmental issues.
Ability to think strategically and act diplomatically while working well with others, including experience working in coalitions with grassroots community-based organizations.
Analytical and problem-solving abilities with an attention to detail.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally; English speaking and writing skills required; Spanish speaking and writing skills preferred.
Bachelor’s degree required.
Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Valid California driver’s license and ability to provide own transportation to work-related events.
Physical Demands
70-85% of time sitting; 5-15% of time standing; and 5-15% of time walking.
Less than 5% of time lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 50 lbs.
Less than 10% of time kneeling, balancing, reaching, crawling, crouching or climbing.
More than 65% of time using eye, hand and finger coordination and more than 40% of time using a computer (keyboarding) and telephone equipment.
