Organizational Summary: The Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI) is a racial justice and migrant rights organization which engages in education, advocacy, and cross-cultural alliance-building in order to strengthen a national movement to end racism, criminalization, and economic disenfranchisement in African American and Black immigrant communities. BAJI’s headquarters are in Brooklyn, NY and we have additional offices in Oakland, CA, Atlanta, GA, and Los Angeles, CA.
BAJI’s CLINIC (Cultural and Legal Immigration Navigation for Interdependent Communities) Program seeks to expand culturally competent legal service provision and address the unique immigration challenges facing Black immigrant communities through client navigation and direct representation. Launched in 2016, CLINIC provides legal resources, immigration screenings, and referrals to Black noncitizens and their families. Over the next six months BAJI is looking to dramatically expand the scope and reach of this program.
Position Summary: The CLINIC Coordinator will develop and implement BAJI’s legal services program in consultation with BAJI staff and board members.
Duties & Essential Job Functions
Lead bi-weekly legal clinics in Black immigrant neighborhoods providing immigration screenings and referrals to attorneys and legal service providers
Train attorney-volunteers to conduct immigration screenings and referrals.
Develop a referral guide for low and no cost legal service providers
Maintains close working relationships with local bar associations and individual participating attorneys and assists private attorneys in resolving any problems with CLINIC cases.
Develop and implement processes for monitoring and evaluating program impact
Maintain client records and databases.
Implement protocols to ensure client confidentiality.
Supervise on-site CLINIC program volunteers.
Qualifications:
J.D., and license to practice law in good standing in any state
At least two years experience practicing immigration law, specifically supporting applications for TPS, asylum/withholding, HFRPP, T & U visas, and/or DACA, amongst other forms of relief.
Knowledge of immigration consequences of criminal contact and current immigration enforcement priorities.
Excellent writing and communication skills, including the ability to discuss public policy issues in clear and concise
Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
Comfortable and experienced in fast-paced environment and handling multiple deadlines
Extremely well organized and systems oriented; Strong analytical skills and the ability to pay attention to detail.
