The Center for Court Innovation, a project of the Fund for the City of New York, is a non-profit organization that promotes new thinking about how to reduce crime and incarceration while strengthening public trust in justice. The Center creates operating projects, including the award-winning Red Hook Community Justice Center and Midtown Community Court; that have been documented to improve public safety and reduce the use of jail and prison. Nationally and internationally, the Center performs original research on topics of justice reform and provides consulting services to criminal justice innovators.
The Center’s Bronx Community Solutions project is seeking a Resource Coordinator for its pretrial supervised release program. Operating out of the Bronx County Criminal Court, the pretrial supervised release program will provide regular monitoring and referral services to misdemeanor and non-violent felony defendants whose cases are pending Criminal Court. The goal of the program is to provide community-based supervision for individuals who would otherwise be detained pretrial on low bail amounts.
Reporting to the Supervised Release Program Manager, the Resource Coordinator will facilitate the program referral process for pretrial release shorty before or after a defendant is arraigned. He/She will review all available information about each potentially eligible defendant to determine whether they are suitable for the program. Once participants are enrolled in the program, they will provide written and verbal update to the court including defense attorneys, Assistant District Attorneys, and Judges on a regular basis. This position is also responsible for providing court coverage to various Criminal and Supreme Court parts, including specialized court initiatives and conducting screenings and assessments for alternative to incarceration cases.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Work closely with defense attorneys to identify participants who will likely have bail set at arraignments;
Screen appropriate misdemeanor and non-violent felony defendants at arraignments to determine risk level and program eligibility;
Communicate with prosecutors, defense attorneys, and other court staff about eligible defendants’ suitability for programs;
Advocate for pretrial release of eligible potential program participants;
Ensure that all defendants who are release to pretrial supervision are connected with a case manager;
Provide written and verbal case updates to the court and other court staff as needed including compliance reporting;
Maintain appropriate client information in electronic databases and hard files, including court assessment, screening and outcome information;
Track cases and manage multiple court room assignments and maintain good courtroom relationships with all participants and partners;
Assist with data collection and management;
Attend all required staff meetings and trainings;
Provide weekend day and night arraignment coverage on a rotating basis;
Screen and/or assess misdemeanor defendants for Alternative to Incarceration program eligibility and service need;
Play a primary role in assessing and crafting social service interventions for specialized court parts addressing the criminogenic needs of adolescents and individuals arrested for prostitution related offenses;
Testify on violations of conditional discharges;
Participate in community outreach as necessary, including attendance at community meetings, meeting with tours, visitors and site visits to other programs;
Participate in on-going court-wide trainings for ATI and ATD programing
Qualifications:
Bachelors degree required; Masters Degree preferred;
Ability to work nights and/or weekends;
At least one year of experience working in a criminal court setting and/or human service field strongly preferred;
Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds in a culturally-competent manner;
Professional demeanor and ability to communicate appropriately with judges and other court personnel;
Excellent organizational and interpersonal, communication and writing skills required;
Bilingual preferred (English/Spanish).
Position Type: Full-time (9:00 am – 5:00 pm), some nights and weekends
