Nourish is a business that has been started by the Good Samaritan Shelter. Nourish is a social enterprise that was legally formed in February 2015 after over a year of planning and consulting.
Nourish is a mobile market that will employ men living at the Good Samaritan Shelter in Phoenixville and will make fresh, healthy and locally grown and produced foods available to everyone in our community. Nourish makes it easy for people to eat fresh and local by meeting them where they are – at work, at school, at play and wherever they find health or spiritual wellness. Nourish encourages people to “eat well and do good” by reinvesting in our local economy and helping Good Samaritan Shelter fulfill its mission to provide hope and dignity to men experiencing homelessness.
The Business Manager will lead the operations and development of Nourish.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Establish at least 10 market sites and a weekly schedule for the market.
2. Manage a team of volunteers to convert the trailer into the market – installing shelving, refrigeration units, etc.
3. Source and purchase produce, dairy, meats, basic canned goods and locally produced foods weekly from wholesalers and retailers, including: calling to gauge availability, negotiating purchase prices, and arranging for pickup or delivery.
4. Manage all financial aspects of the market, including: setting market prices, recording weekly sales, weekly purchases, EBT purchases, and other expenses as needed. Profits and cash must be accurately reconciled each week.
5. Secure state/local licenses to operate the mobile market.
6. Secure EBT and credit card charging capabilities.
7. Work with our marketing firm to develop and manage effective print, online and mobile marketing strategies, materials and communications.
8. Train and supervise paid part-time staff members from Good Samaritan Shelter’s client community.
9. Drive and sell goods from the mobile market truck to market sites weekly.
10. Work with Good Samaritan Shelter staff to build relationships with civic, business and community leaders to raise brand visibility and support for the market.
11. Assure proper maintenance of the truck, trailer and refrigeration units.
Qualifications:
1. Experience in retail sales (food-related preferred).
2. Knowledge of food distribution.
3. Experience with start-up retail business
4. A love of fresh, local and healthy foods and enthusiasm for sharing food shopping, preparation, and menu/recipe selection.
5. Financial management proficiency.
6. Entrepreneurial, dedicated and enthusiastic for the mission of Nourish.
7. Supervisory experience (preferred).
8. Ability to work evenings, weekdays and weekends (if needed).
9. Ability to lift 50 pounds in and out of a raised bed truck.
10. Clean driving record.
11. Ability to drive and safely maneuver a truck and trailer.
12. Knowledge of local food producers.
Other Requirements:
1. The Business Manager will report directly to the Advisory Committee and the Good Samaritan Shelter Executive Director and Board of Directors.
2. The Business Manager’s work schedule shall be determined as needed.
3. Ability to assume responsibility and make decisions.
4. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff.
5. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with all staff.
6. Ability to express ideas orally and in writing.
7. Ability to understand and willingness to support the mission and goals of the Shelter and Nourish.
