Chief Executive Officer – Opening Doors Inc – Sacramento, CA

THE ORGANIZATION: Opening Doors is a nonprofit organization that helps underserved Sacramento area residents to achieve self-sufficiency and increased assets by accessing opportunities to mainstream economic, legal and social systems. The organization assists clients through refugee resettlement and cultural orientation; case management for foreign-national survivors of human trafficking; low-cost immigration legal services; increased knowledge and skills in personal financial management; and business training, counselling and microloans. Additionally Opening Doors provides administration and leadership of the Sacramento Area Rescue and Restore Coalition to combat human trafficking.

The organization has undergone a period of growth and infrastructure development during the past five years, and is well poised for future continued growth and expanded impact. With an operating budget of about $2 million, Opening Doors has a staff of 23 part- and fulltime staff from diverse parts of the world.

Position Title: Chief Executive Officer

Report To: Board of Directors

FLSA Classification: Exempt/Full Time

Date Needed in Position: January 1, 2016

SUMMARY: The Chief Executive Officer will manage the three senior staff and the Communications Coordinator. He or she will have primary responsibility for fundraising and for elevating the organization’s profile through communications and building community relationships. The Chief Executive Officer will oversee agency’s finances and continue efforts to strengthen the organization’s financial position by growing and diversifying the funding streams. He or she will provide leadership both internally and externally, and will work with the Board of Directors (Board) to carry out a strategic planning process.

Key Responsibilities:

In collaboration with the Board and senior management, engages in a comprehensive and inclusive strategic planning process. Oversees the execution of the plan.
Provides leadership to staff; promotes teamwork and identifies areas for professional development.
Supports Board in fully understanding organizational environment, strengths and challenges and in fulfilling its governance, ambassadorial and strategic responsibilities.
Ensures that the organization reaches its resource development goals. Continues to increase private support and identify additional revenue streams to decrease dependence on federal funding.
Acts as chief spokesperson for Opening Doors and its programs. Builds upon the organization’s community standing and visibility through the development and implementation of cutting edge and dynamic communications strategies.
Together with senior management, builds relationships with new stakeholders and explores new partnerships to further program and fundraising goals.
Oversees budget preparation and effective administration. Assures that effective internal controls are being exercised.
Provides leadership and guidance to the Rescue and Restore Coalition in reaching its goal of engaging a broad cross-section of those doing anti-trafficking work in the greater Sacramento area and northeastern California.

Qualifications and Competencies:

Ability to think strategically and creatively with a flexible and entrepreneurial mindset. Able to translate broad goals into achievable steps.
Excellent and well-rounded leadership and organizational skills. High integrity and a passion for the Opening Doors’ mission and goals.
Strong commitment to the professional development of staff and a successful track record of recruiting and retaining a diverse team.
Senior management experience of at least three years and ideally more, with proven results preferably in the non-profit sector and prior experience working at a high level with non-profit Boards of Directors
Ability to develop and manage a shared strategic vision with Opening Doors’ Board.
Solid nonprofit fundraising experience with documented success, and ability to develop long-term relationships with funders; ability to identify new revenue streams. The CEO must be a strong grant-writer.
Demonstrated competence in nonprofit financial strategy and management.
Outstanding presentation and communication skills and the experience and proclivity to be an outgoing spokesperson, relationship builder and fundraiser.
Effective communicator: excellent verbal and written communications skills; persuasive presentation style, ability to have tough conversations in a respectful way.
Well-developed interpersonal and relationship building skills; interacts well with people from all segments of the community; politically savvy, diplomatic.
Excellent coalition building skills with an ability to communicate and work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders as a persuasive negotiator able to achieve consensus amongst differing opinions.
Strong business acumen and nonprofit management experience; demonstrated experience integrating and coordinating diverse areas of management; proven experience with financial management and budgeting.
Experience managing complex budgets with multiple funding sources.
Experience managing both social service and economic development programs a plus.
Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year College or university in social services, business management/administration or related fields.
At least 3 years’ direct supervision experience.
