The Opportunity:
The Civic Engagement Manager (CEM) will be responsible for leading the recruitment and support of volunteer Citizen Teachers required to sustain and grow one of Citizen Schools’ impact in the Houston region. The CEM will manage a portfolio of relationships with organizations that provide a pipeline of volunteers, particularly focused on corporations, nonprofits, and universities in Houston. Specifically, the CEM will plan and execute volunteer recruitment, steward existing relationships, and research and cultivate new relationships. Supporting the Director of External Engagement, the CEM will work as part of a team that includes the regional leadership, which is responsible for meeting the goals for Citizen Schools’ brand and presence throughout the Citizen Schools Texas region.
This position reports to the Managing Director of External Engagement and is based in Houston .
Responsibilities include:
Development and stewardship of strategic partnerships
Steward individual Citizen Teachers and organizational partnerships to build a movement of industry leaders in every sector committed to improving education and career opportunities
Leverage relationships with individual Citizen Teachers and organizational partners to yield multiple streams of resources for Citizen Schools, including volunteers, fundraising, political advocacy and media exposure
Partner with the MDEE, as well as national Civic Engagement staff, to develop recruitment targets.
Recruit volunteers and develop apprenticeships that will meet each school’s needs for academic and 21st Century skills.
Work with national and regional Civic Engagement colleagues to develop deep multi-location partnerships that advance Citizen Schools’ program and civic engagement goals
Work with MDEE to recruit members for the Board of Advocates
Apprenticeship Management
Work closely with campus staff to coordinate apprenticeships including volunteer placement, materials and technology
Participate in the planning and execution of volunteer orientation and training
Implement volunteer policies, procedures, and best practices
Maintain accurate records and provide timely statistical and activity reports on CT performance and satisfaction
Create and maintain volunteer-related content on website, newsletters, and other communications
Actively participate in national External Engagement cohort calls, events, and information sharing
Volunteer Management
Provide ongoing support and guidance to Campus Staff regarding their volunteers
Check in regularly with campus staff to ensure volunteer satisfaction once semester has begun
Confer with volunteers to resolve grievances and promote cooperation and interest
Assess and implement Citizen Teacher feedback received through CT survey and training exit tickets
Oversee campus management of volunteer appreciation efforts and events
STEM VISTA Management
Manage STEM Vista, coaching him/her in recruitment, lead follow up, and CT/campus connections.
Event Support
Leverage end-of-semester WOW! to cultivate and steward donors
Plan, coordinate, and execute annual City Wide STEM WOW!
Support engagement events: i.e. CT appreciation, alumni, recruitment and fundraising events
Qualifications
Passion for closing the achievement gap, with a fundamental belief that all students can succeed on an absolute scale
3-5 years of professional experience; experience with volunteer management, sales and/or external relations a plus, but not required
Outstanding project management skills, with strong attention to detail and a demonstrated ability to ensure on-time completion of long-term projects
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to produce a variety of attractive and compelling materials for external audiences
Exceptional public speaking and presentation skills; experience delivering trainings a plus
Advanced proficiency in Salesforce database management, PowerPoint, and Excel strongly preferred
Strong team orientation, ability to provide and accept feedback, and ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
Ability to model and internalize Citizen Schools’ core values: pride, joy, respect, courage, teamwork, perseverance, and vision
Knowledge of Houston institutions and community leadership would be helpful, but not required
Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience, from an accredited institution required
