Communications and Volunteer Manager – New York – Washington Square Park Conservancy

The Washington Square Park Conservancy seeks a Communications and Volunteer Manager (35 hours/week) to oversee and build the organization’s communications and manage its growing volunteer programs.

The Washington Square Park Conservancy (WSPC) is a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization working with the New York City Parks Department and neighborhood groups to ensure that Washington Square Park continues as a diverse and historical urban green space through engaging volunteers and raising funds to help keep the park clean, safe and beautiful. The WSPC is a small and relatively young organization, and this is a unique opportunity to shape and define the communications role as the organization grows over the next few years.

Reporting to the Community Development Director, the Communications and Volunteer Manager will manage print, web, and social media communications to expand organization’s communications with the wider community, donors, partners and park users. The position will also coordinate the organization’s volunteer programs, including an in-park greeter-guide program, Wednesday Weeders, photography volunteers, and regular in-park clean up days.

Communications Responsibilities: (70%)
Plan and implement communications calendar in concert with Executive Director and Community Development Director
Develop strategies to grow number of email subscribers and social media followers
Produce twice yearly newsletter, including writing content and sourcing images, coordination with graphic designer and print house, and distribution (print and digital)
Produce three e-newsletters each month, creating content and layout
Manage website, including content updates, statistics, new web projects and tracking statistics
Manage WSPC’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts, including content planning, daily postings, and tracking statistics.
Develop and promote WSPC merchandise to help the organization become more recognizable in the community
Along with the Community Development Director, organize and coordinate outreach events, make presentations, and speak in the community on behalf of the organization

Volunteer Management Responsibilities: (30%)
Manage recruitment for current volunteer programs
Develop and manage current organization volunteers, including planning and executing orientation sessions
Develop and manage volunteer engagement programs tailored to the WSPC’s varied volunteer programs, including recognition programs
Source volunteer program apparel, tools, and more
Track volunteer participation and create reports demonstrating volunteer participation throughout the year
Develop and expand additional volunteer programs, opportunities and recognition as needed

Qualifications:
WSPC seeks an experienced, creative self-starter who can manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

Applicants are expected to possess the following:

A minimum of 2 years of managing communication functions;
A minimum of 1 year of volunteer or personnel management;
Familiarity with nonprofit communications and social media strategies;
Familiarity with volunteerism, training and recognition;
Excellent interpersonal skills & capacity to interact with many types of people;
Excellent written communication skills; must be detail-oriented;
Advanced ability to problem-solve and generate ideas;
Knowledge of and commitment to open space and parks

Additional skills:
Photography, graphic design, HTML, google analytics, website SEO optimization, sense of humor
