Communications Director – Washington – Democracy Initiative

The Democracy Initiative (DI) is a dynamic network of organizations working toward a vibrant future in which all Americans participate fully and freely in the democratic process. We believe that the voice of every voter should be heard and counted, and the influence of corporate money

in our democracy reduced so all of us have an equal say in a democracy that is of, by, and for the people. The Democracy Initiative Education Fund (DIEF) is a national, nonpartisan, research and education organization committed to building a vibrant democracy. DIEF’s core activities

center on research related to democratic engagement and public education on important issues to preserve and improve our democracy.

The Director of Communications is a senior role within the DI leadership team. He or she will

be responsible for creating strategic communications and driving a national field communications plan to build a movement around democracy. This will include communicating on behalf of the DI, as well as building the capacity of individual organizations that have endorsed the Democracy Initiative to engage with issues related to democracy. This position will develop and drive shared media and messaging strategies and multi-organizational campaigns. The Director of

Communications will report to the Executive Director and will work closely with communications teams at DI organizations.

The ideal candidate will have 10 or more years of experience working in strategic communications, advocacy, political or issue campaign communications, and will have a strong understanding of both traditional media as well as social and digital platforms and strategies. S/he will have direct experience and/or demonstrated commitment to progressive issues and movement building, with an understanding of the issues and organizations working in the democracy field. S/he will also have a proven track record of project management, especially in coalitions or network-centric organizations, and building relationships with leaders. Experience developing and implementing strategic communications plans that focus on influencing national debates is essential.

Democracy Initiative’s approach to communications is grounded in movement building. We see communications as a tool to mobilize at the grassroots level and influence the national debate. Our role is to help shift the national discourse and equip organizations with the necessary tools to engage in the national debate around democracy.

DUTIES:
Develop and implement compelling communications plans that provide myriad opportunities for DI member groups to participate.

Coordinate the communications staff of key organizations to develop branded campaigns that move a coordinated and consistent message around democracy.

Work with staff of affiliated organizations to coordinate branded media and social media campaigns, earned media related to strategies and events, and rapid response.

Draft timely and effective talking points, messaging tips, op-eds, and letters to the editor in response to breaking news developments or ahead of known media opportunities.

Manage relationships with key reporters, bloggers, and allies including drafting press releases and blog posts and securing earned media coverage.

Draft external content for the DI and DIEF, including web and social media content, periodic communications with allies and supporters, and op-eds and LTEs.

Support the communications and education capacity of groups within the Democracy Initiative network by creating materials (e.g. blog posts, videos, PowerPoints, social media, etc.) that further the ability of DI organizations to speak to their grassroots members about democracy issues.

Develop systems for testing communications efforts and obtain and process insights to ensure continued iteration and improvement.

Manage the supervision of interns and fellows. Other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Very strong writing, editing, communications, messaging, and presentation skills

Demonstrated commitment to the issues outlined above and 10 years of experience working in communications strategy, community or political organizing, grassroots issue campaigns, or all of the above.

A proven record of effective coalition-building or management of multi-organizational or networked campaigns, including an ability to build relationships with colleagues and peers and successfully engage them in campaigns.

Experience monitoring and analyzing news coverage, writing press materials, developing media strategies, and successfully securing earned media stories.

A creative and strategic ability to frame ideas, develop stories, and synthesize complex policy issues in a way that appeals to the news media, grassroots activists, and a wide variety of audiences.

A proven ability to manage a fast-paced, multi-faceted workload that involves media and communications.

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with varying levels of organization staff, clients, contractors, foundations, and the media.

Demonstrated resourcefulness and flexibility in approach to project assignments. Strong research and administrative skills.
