Community Advocate – Housing Rights Program – San Francisco – Asian Americans Advancing Justice

As the nation’s oldest legal organization focusing on the civil rights of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Asian Law Caucus is a leader in defending the interests of low-income immigrants. Since 1972, Advancing Justice – ALC has litigated high-profile cases and provided an array of services including community education, advocacy, and direct client representation. Our current program areas include national security and civil rights, immigration, housing rights, workers’ rights, voting rights, and criminal justice reform. Advancing Justice – ALC works closely with our Advancing Justice partners in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C., to strengthen and elevate a national API voice for civil rights.

Position Summary: Advancing Justice-ALC is recruiting a bilingual community advocate to work on tenant rights and other housing issues. S/he will support the provision of housing legal services addressing the needs of Asian American, Pacific Islander, and other vulnerable immigrant communities. S/he will be the contact main point of contact between clients and housing attorneys, and will stay closely connected to grassroots communities. Previous experience with housing rights is strongly desired.

Key responsibilities include:
Provide support to housing rights team in unlawful detainer cases, other litigation, administrative proceedings (e.g., Rent Board petitions), and other tenant related matters
Schedule appointments, interview clients, keep clients updated, and manage casefiles and other administrative responsibilities when needed
Participate in coordination and support for legal clinics
Maintain knowledge and support compliance with government contract deliverables
Engage in public policy advocacy, community legal education, and coalition building
Community organizing with partner organizations and creating opportunities for grassroots organizing
Strategize with Housing Rights team on case related matters and the overall program’s goal
Work closely with housing advocates to understand and be involved with activities related to better protections for tenants
Report to housing rights staff attorneys

Qualifications:
At least two years experience working with low-income Asian American communities and/or other immigrant communities
Required written and spoken fluency in Chinese Cantonese
Strong, demonstrable commitment to social, racial, and economic justice
Excellent research, analytical, written, and oral communication skills and highly detail oriented
Strong interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills
Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a timely manner
B.A./B.S. or highly relevant work experience
Proficiency with Google Apps and Microsoft suite of applications
Ability to work some weekends and evenings
