JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Director of Community Engagement, the Community Engagement Coordinator oversees and coordinates activities relating to building and developing relationships and leadership of public housing residents in Alemany, Holly Courts and Bernal Dwellings Housing Developments. This position is characterized by a high degree of resident organizing experience, initiative, organization, responsibility, interest and dedication to, and an ability to work with a diverse group of staff, community members, funders, and consultants. The position also requires advanced verbal and written communication ability.
BERNAL HEIGHTS NEIGHBORHOOD CENTER: Now celebrating our 36th year as a community-based, member-led nonprofit organization, BHNC’s mission is to preserve and enhance the ethnic, cultural, and economic diversity of Bernal Heights and surrounding neighborhoods. We accomplish our mission by developing affordable housing throughout San Francisco; providing linguistically and culturally responsive services to our community’s most vulnerable adults, seniors, youth, and their families; developing leaders; and organizing and empowering our tenants, clients, members, and allies to advocate for their needs and for the needs of the community.
Our unique role as neighborhood hub, affordable housing developer, and service provider includes years of experience in meeting city program deliverables, rigorous fiscal and administrative practices that have provided clean audits over an impressive number of years, and a mission that is rooted in leadership development and culturally and linguistically responsive community engagement. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop and organize Public Housing Working Group at Bernal Dwellings
Provide support for organizing and facilitating a monthly meeting with Alemany and Holly
Court housing community leaders, neighbors, Mayor’s Office of Housing, SF Housing Authority, SF City Attorney’s office, other city agencies, service organizations, representatives from the Ingleside Police Station, and community members to address issues and concerns specific to the Alemany and Holly Court housing developments.
Provide support for community and tenant engagement related activities including, but not limited to collaborative work with partner organizations, service providers, neighborhood groups, organizations, community leaders and members in the southeastern part of the city.
Coordinate leadership development and public safety activities, including but not limited to violence prevention groups, leadership training workshops, and bring in service providers to address community needs in the housing developments.
Represent BHNC in meetings and events – some of which may be in the evenings or weekends.
Develop, coordinate and establish meetings, activities, regular outreach and resident engagement activities.

Participate in BHNC community-wide efforts and events including the annual membership drive, Fiesta on the Hill street fair, and BHNC’s annual Community Congress, among others.
Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE
Dedication to social action, social justice, civic engagement and leadership development.
Must have a minimum of three years experience in community organizing work with mixed class, multi-racial, multi-ethnic communities, primarily in public housing and affordable housing communities.
Detail-oriented, highly organized, able to manage and prioritize tasks toward short–term and long-term project goals.
Able to prioritize tasks in a fast paced and independent environment
Ability to interact with and positively engage people of various social, ethnic, cultural,
linguistic, religious, economic and educational backgrounds.
Strong organizational skills with attention to details, consistently able to follow through
and able to handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel and email programs
Strong sense of accountability and responsibility.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and travel up and down stairways. Note: physical demands

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working in San Francisco neighborhoods.
Experience or familiarity with public housing.
Bilingual/bi-cultural in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Ethnic Studies, Urban Studies, Sociology, or related
field.
