Job description
The Health Promotion Programs of the Dominican Women’s Development Center aims to serve as a resource for community members to make conscious health and wellness decisions for themselves and their families. Together, we strive to create solutions in addressing health disparities in the New York City area. Our dynamic programming offers access to care, counseling and education, peer training, and referral services.
Under the supervision of the Outreach Coordinator and Community Health Worker Manager of New York Presbyterian Hospital, the Community Health Worker is responsible for performing outreach, education, and referral services within the scope and goals of New York’s End the Epidemic Campaign.
– Conduct street outreach in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx in order to reach MSM, sex workers and other communities at high risk for HIV/STI/HCV with the support of peers
– Identify locations and settings such as after hour parties to provide outreach and dissemination of safer sex kits and resources; requiring late evenings and weekend hours
– Provide participant recruitment and referrals for groups, medical services, and access to services
– Perform HIV/HCV rapid testing at program site or in outreach settings as appropriate
– Collaborate with the Health Promotion Programs team in utilizing social networking strategies to conduct in home educational workshops
– Assist Outreach Coordinator in evaluating program materials, outreach strategies, and client satisfaction for quality assurance
– Participate in biweekly and monthly team meetings
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
– Must be fluent in both English and Spanish
– Must have over 3+ years experience in community outreach and/or HIV/STI/HCV testing
– Experience working with sex workers, drug users, formerly incarcerated, MSM, LGBTQ, and HIV+ populations, additional preferable work experience includes working with volunteers
– Must have experience working in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx, specifically with Latinx communities
– Must be available to work late evenings and weekends
– Experience and commitment in working with harm reduction and human rights frameworks
– Dynamic, approachable, and centered on the needs of the community engaged
– Ability to communicate effectively both verbal and written
– Strong commitment to the mission and vision of DWDC is a must
