Community Organizer – Brooklyn – NY Communities for Change

New York Communities for Change seeks a full-time community organizer to fight gentrification, school privatization, foreclosures, climate change and other critical issues facing low income communities of color.

The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to build a neighborhood organization through building relationships with and mobilizing community members. They will understand the urgency of the issues facing our communities and will be committed to getting results and winning victories for our communities while working in a fast paced environment. This position is an excellent position to build real community power and play a key role in organizing some of the most exciting grassroots campaigns in New York State.

The community organizer is a staff member of NYCC reporting to a Lead Community Organizer(s).

We are people fighting to make a difference, using our power in numbers to effect change throughout New York. By using direct action, legislative advocacy, and community organizing, our members work to impact the political and economic policies that directly affect us.

Job Responsibilities:
Building a robust neighborhood based chapter(s) that meet regularly to take action on issues in the community and statewide
Mobilizing community members to fight back against issues affecting their communities
Identifying and developing community leaders
Signing up new NYCC members

Qualifications:
We’re seeking candidates who are results oriented, have strong time management skills and who are committed to social and economic justice. You should have:

At least 1 year of organizing experience in labor, community, student or political organizations or campaigns
Demonstrated ability to build organizing committees or to mobilize constituents to take action on campaigns
Proven grassroots fundraising abilities
Experience working under pressure in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment
Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends
Bilingual (Spanish or Haitian Creole) is strongly preferred. People of Color strongly encouraged to apply.
