Description
The NYCLU seeks well-qualified candidates for the full-time position of Deputy Chapter Director for Nassau and Suffolk County Chapters. Reporting to the Chapter Director for Nassau and Suffolk County Chapters, the Deputy Director will work with local advocacy groups, statewide NYCLU staff, and members of our local volunteer advisory boards to maintain a strong civil liberties voice on Long Island. The NYCLU Long Island chapters tackle a vast array of issues, including education rights, free speech rights, reproductive rights, immigrants’ rights, police reform, mass incarceration, LGBTQ rights, privacy, and racial justice.

The ideal candidate will possess a proactive, energetic, multi-tasking work temperament with a passion for and knowledge of civil liberties issues. We welcome applicants with a range of backgrounds, but candidates with experience in the following areas may be especially qualified for this position: constituent services, community organizing, political or labor organizing, education, social work, law or legal services, policy analysis, social science, journalism, public relations.

Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Chapter Director, monitor and respond to civil liberties concerns using a range of strategies, including public education, community organizing, lobbying, public events and rallies, building partnerships, and writing and delivering public testimony.
Identify and cultivate community members, volunteers, elected officials, and influencers to support NYCLU’s Long Island work. Recruit and sustain NYCLU members and supporters through event planning, outreach, and visibility in the region.
Respond to and refer calls for legal assistance, identify and match intakes to NYCLU priorities and mission, and work with legal and advocacy staff to identify appropriate remedies.
Assist in managing a small office, including supervising volunteers and interns, interfacing with the public, and maintaining office equipment and inventory.
Act as a local representative, spokesperson, and “eyes and ears” of the NYCLU.

Experience and Qualifications:
Must have a valid driver’s license and consistent access to a vehicle;
A Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent education or experience;
A demonstrated passion for civil liberties/civil rights;
Willingness and availability to work weekends and/or evenings;
Excellent written and oral communication skills;
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Skype;
Familiarity with or significant ties to Long Island a plus;
Fluency in Spanish a plus.
