Shanti exists to enhance the quality of life, health and well-being of people with life-threatening illnesses. Founded in 1974, Shanti was one of the first-ever volunteer organizations to work with people with terminal illnesses, and, later, became the first community-based agency in the U.S. to respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Shanti annually serves over 2,000 individuals with HIV/AIDS, breast and other women’s cancers and other life-threatening conditions.
Position Overview
Shanti offers a supportive work atmosphere, and the staff is mission-driven, passionate and includes many former volunteers. Reporting to the Development Director, the Deputy Development Director (DDD) will help lead the continued growth and expansion of Shanti’s fundraising efforts and sustain the organization’s enhanced visibility in the foundation and philanthropic communities. Following a recent merger with long-time community partner, PAWS (Pets Are Wonderful Support), the DDD will share the responsibility to achieve and exceed an annual fundraising goal of over $2,200,000.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Working with the Executive Director, the Development Director and team and the Board of Directors, The DDD will executive the following responsibilities:
Strengthen Shanti’s major donor program and continue to grow the individual donor program, by recruiting, cultivating and maintaining relations with donors and prospective donors
Increase the number, consistency and size of gifts, sponsorships and grants
Play a key role in successfully facilitating Shanti’s semi-annual special events, including the Annual Anniversary Event for 500+ guests
Support Shanti’s grant process, which includes initiating contact and enhancing relationships with foundation grant officers; and writing and submitting grant applications, reports, progress updates, letters of inquiry and other written materials
Research, analyze and prioritize new sources of funding and revenue from foundations, businesses, individuals and philanthropic networks
Contribute to the drafting of annual development plan
Help create a formal communications program, which will include Shanti’s online communications, social media presence, Shanti’s semi-annual newsletter and community marketing opportunities
Assist with the rollout of a newly-initiated planned giving program
Required Qualifications
Minimum three years’ prior fundraising experience
Demonstrated experience in a wide range of fundraising techniques and a tangible track record of success in development, including major gift fundraising, event planning and management, grant writing and communications.
Demonstrated success in providing gift planning assistance to major donors, securing major financial commitments and achieving personal revenue targets.
Thorough knowledge of marketing and donor stewardship methods.
Experience with and desire to work in an entrepreneurial environment.
Superior written and oral communications and interpersonal and presentation skills.
Demonstrated ability to lead, manage and support a department and to work as an effective member of a diverse team.
Computer proficiency and experience using[[http:Salesforce.com|Salesforce.com]] CRM preferred.
A thorough understanding and enthusiasm for Shanti’s mission.
Bachelor’s degree.
