Agency Description: Since 1995, Oakland Kids First (OKF) has empowered visionary youth leaders to transform Oakland schools and improve student achievement through leadership training, peer mentoring and advocacy. OKF partners with Oakland public high schools and the district to ensure hundreds of students have meaningful roles and responsibilities in school change efforts. OKF equips youth leaders with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to: 1) provide peer academic mentoring to 1,800 ninth graders annually; 2) engage the student body in building positive, safe and healthy school cultures; and 3) partner with parents and school staff to increase equity for the most under-served students.
Primary Responsibilities and Focus:
The Deputy Director will provide administrative and programmatic systems development and oversight, as well as partner with the administrative team to implement OKF’s three-year strategic plan. The Deputy Director will develop and evaluate new program and administrative frameworks to strengthen the OKF Engagement for Equity model. The Deputy Director will embody OKF’s commitment to youth leadership development, culture change, and high quality programs with a dual focus on ‘heart and rigor’. The Deputy Director will also partner with the Executive Director in fund development efforts to support the organization’s growth and expansion. The Deputy Director position provides critical leadership in the organization to support youth and adult partnerships and collaborative efforts towards equity and justice in Oakland’s public high schools.
Duties will include:
Strategic Planning Implementation
In partnership with the Executive Director and the administrative team, develop annual goals and objectives to meet long-range strategic planning outcomes. Towards this end, develop an implementation plan and metrics to measure progress towards OKF’s three-year strategic plan.
In partnership with the Director of Youth Programs, oversee Staff Development processes such as: quarterly staff retreats, staff development plans, staff professional training, and staff performance and 360 evaluations.
Develop with the Executive Director and the Oakland Unified School District, field-building strategies to support school site alignment with OKF’s Engagement for Equity principles and practices.
Administrative and Program Systems Development
Lead agency-wide evaluation processes to measure, evaluate, and document progress towards organizational and individual staff performance goals and outcomes.
In partnership with the Director of Youth Programs, strengthen and develop systems for: annual and quarterly program planning and implementation; curriculum development; and program collaboration to effectively support program teams to achieve program goals and outcomes at partner schools.
Update evaluation frameworks and manage program data collection systems to report program efficacy and document impact.
Fundraising and Financial Management
Support the Executive Director and Development Consultant in proposal development and submission.
Manage grant reporting — gather data summaries and evaluation impact reports, coordinate with Finance Manager and staff, and write grant reports.
Support the Executive Director and Finance Consultant in submission of an annual operational budget, oversee the effective management within this budget, and create and monitor systems for tracking of income and expenses by grant sources
Develop a robust communications strategy and plan that substantially raises the visibility of the issues and approaches undertaken by OKF – increasing it’s online and social media presence.
Operations Management
Oversee the management of facilities and day-to-day operations, including Human Resources.
Oversee office management systems including phones, mail, vendor relationships, technology, supply purchase, requests for information, and office protocols.
Strengthen information management and communication systems.
Negotiate property leases and oversee equipment purchases.
Ensure compliance with government contracts and reporting.
Critical Skills/Experience:
Master’s Degree in Education, nonprofit management, or related field preferred.
At least five years experience working within youth development nonprofit and/or public education organizations and schools.
Experience in Administration and Program Systems development and implementation. Must be well-organized and able to support colleagues with developing and maintaining organizational systems to support high quality program work.
Experience with the development and implementation of impact based evaluation frameworks and processes.
Experience collaborating with others effectively and leading a nonprofit organization or school team achieve long-term goals.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to create and model a culture of peer support, collaboration, and appreciation.
Proactive in troubleshooting and problem solving in an inclusive manner with a diverse staff.
Effective planning, organizational, and logistical skills with an ability to follow through.
Excellent communicator with excellent writing and speaking skills.
Proficient with multiple computer programs including Microsoft Office Suite, Google Docs and online file sharing.
