Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) prepares, trains, and places women in careers in the skilled construction, utility, and maintenance trades, helping women achieve economic independence and a secure future. Founded in 1978, NEW is a sector-based workforce development program that focuses on placing women in skilled, unionized jobs in the trades with starting wages averaging $17 per hour, benefits, and a path to higher-wage employment. NEW primarily serves low-income minority women from all five boroughs in New York City. NEW’s program has grown significantly in the last five years. NEW trains over 400 women annually and has an annual budget of $3 million.
Position Overview
NEW is seeking a Development and Communications Associate to assist the Vice President of Development & External Affairs, President, staff, and Board in outreach, cultivation, and coordination of donors, volunteers, and other partners. The Development and Communications Associate will have a major role in managing NEW’s annual fundraiser – the NEW Equity Leadership Awards Luncheon.
The Development and Communications Associate reports to the Vice President of Development and External Affairs. The primary job responsibilities are as follows:
Assist in creating and implementing of NEW’s annual development and communications plan.
Assist in management of NEW’s Annual Fundraising Event; manage Event Committee; create and maintain event guest lists and solicitation lists; manage the development of event invitation, journal, and on-line information; manage all event-related information and logistics of event.
Manage NEW’s grant contract system – keeping track of deadlines, ensuring files are up-to-date and assisting in preparing reports.
Follow up with donors as necessary, including coordination of individual meetings, site visits, phone calls, special mailings, and other relationship-building correspondence and activities.
Support NEW committees and volunteers in their fundraising and cultivation.
Assist in the development of cultivation and donor acknowledgement events, including materials necessary for their success.
Assist in the research of donors and donor prospects.
Manage the re-design and implementation of NEW’s website, social media sites, and on-line giving campaigns.
Create and implement a social media campaign for NEW that includes tradeswomen and program success stories as well as key-industry news and insights.
Manage NEW’s donor and contact information system.
Oversee input of all pledges and gifts and prepare and send thank you letters.
Work directly with Finance to ensure reconciliation of donor and financial information.
Serve as liaison to the Board of Directors and prepare Board mailings and minutes.
Maintain Executive calendar and assist with the collection and preparation of materials for meetings, events, and deadlines.
Provide administrative assistance to the President and Vice President as needed.
Maintain a solid understanding of organization’s core program and policy issues.
Actively participate as a contributing member of the full staff and its overall mission.
Requirements
The candidate will be a self-motivated, innovative thinker. The candidate will possess the ability to take initiative, work independently, prioritize responsibilities and deadlines, and think creatively. The following qualifications and experience are required:
Bachelors Degree
4+ years of experience in development work for a not-for-profit organization
Member of Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP)
Must possess excellent communication, writing, and computer skills
Experience with Social Media sites and campaigns a must
Experience with fundraising databases
Familiarity with the construction and real estate industry, workforce development, poverty, and/or women’s issues a plus
