Title: Development Coordinator

Status: Full-time, Exempt

Salary: To be determined depending on experience

Hours: Flexible, Monday through Friday with some evenings and weekends

Reports to: Vice President of Planning, Development and Evaluation

Position Description:

Sasha Bruce Youthwork (SBY) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of youth and families in the Washington DC area. The agency includes 19 programs ranging from shelter for homeless youth to service-enriched transitional housing to street outreach, as well as a variety of counseling interventions using a competency-based youth development approach. Under the direction of the Vice President of Planning, Development and Evaluation, the Development Coordinator (DC) will improve the agency’s ability to promote its mission through development of relationships with potential funders, grant writing for existing and new services, and conducting special community events, including fundraising events. The DA also will supervise the agency’s service corps members, and one or more Development Department interns.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills:

BA or BS degree, preferably in English, journalism or communications.
Experience “opening doors” to grant-making institutions.
Experience with planning and executing a nonprofit agency’s special events.
Ability to communicate effectively with staff, the media, board members and external stakeholders.
Experience preparing and writing funding applications to grant-making foundations and other funders.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Detail-oriented and organized.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Represent the mission and needs of the agency (and its clients) at public events and through written materials.
Solicit supporters. This will entail competence using SBY’s development database.
Provide direct supervision of the Volunteer Coordinator (a service corps member), and ensure compliance with all applicable standards in this area.
Participate in meetings of the governing board’s fundraising committee, and manage duties related to annual gala and other board-led fundraising events.
Work as part of the SBY development team that strategically shapes the agency’s direction through funding opportunities, based upon agency mission and priorities.
Plan, promote and execute special “awareness” and fundraising events.
Prospect for private and government sector funding opportunities in-line with agency’s priorities, and compose and submit applications to improve current services and to offer new services. Expectation is for this position to complete at least 2 grant application protocols—and subsequent proposals–each month.
Participate in agency’s social media strategies. This will entail competence using SBY’s website and email content management systems.
Coordinate direct mail solicitations and on-line fundraising efforts.
Maintain internal and external case materials.
Other writing projects and special tasks as assigned by the Development Director.
