Development Director

In These Times, a national, nonprofit independent news magazine, seeks a Development Director to lead the organization’s fundraising efforts.

Reporting to and in partnership with the Editor & Publisher, the Development Director will spearhead the major gift, grant and sponsorship programs, oversee development support staff, and run special events.

Founded in 1976, In These Times produces a monthly print magazine and daily website with the mission of advancing democracy and economic justice. We are a rapidly growing magazine that has defied the “death of print” by expanding circulation 50% in the past year. We’re looking for someone eager to work with a passionate, smart and dedicated staff to take the organization to the next level while never losing sight of the greater political mission.

Responsibilities:

Develop and execute In These Times’ annual fundraising plan and case for support, ensuring that annual fundraising goals are met
Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with major donors; serve as a public face for the magazine, and network to boost the organization’s profile
Secure financial support from individuals, foundations and corporations
Write grant proposals and reports, managing the calendar for foundation fundraising
Work with the Editor & Publisher and board of directors to identify and solicit union sponsorships and grow the organization’s sponsorship program
Organize special events to promote the magazine and work closely with the ITT board of directors to execute an annual fundraising benefit
Produce the organization’s annual report in collaboration with editorial staff
Oversee staff responsible for data entry, gift processing and donor acknowledgement
Develop strategy for a large sustained base of annual individual donors and oversee support staff
Work with the Editor & Publisher and other staff to plan and coordinate editorial content with fundraising efforts that supports In These Times’ mission and builds readership

Qualifications:

Required:

Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and communication skills
Exceptional writing and editing abilities
Enthusiastic and infectious attitude about the magazine’s mission
Strong networking skills
Flexibility, resourcefulness, and a sense of humor

Preferred:

Grant writing experience
Experience working at a nonprofit media organization
3+ years experience in development

Reports to: Editor & Publisher

Supervises: Development Assistant

Salary commensurate with experience. Generous benefits, including health, dental and paid parental leave. This is a non-union management position. In These Times is based in Chicago; applicants must live in Chicago or be willing to relocate.
