Position Summary:
The Development Manager is responsible for the effective execution of fundraising campaigns and events. The successful candidate is a passionate fundraiser with a proven track record of success, a gifted communicator, has high emotional IQ, is a team player and is a collaborator who believes in the role of funds development in social change and advancing the JSA mission. S/he will have the project management, communications and relationship skills to manage volunteers, coordinate with staff in various departments, and represent the organization to funders and prospects, including alumni, board members, and institutional funders. This position will work closely with the supporting staff members, and will report directly to the Chief Development Officer.

About the JSA Development Department: Though JSA is in its ninth decade of operation, the intentional execution of funds development best-practices is in it’s fifth year. Tapping into a network of passionately committed JSA alumni, we are forging a community of stakeholders whose engagement has propelled us to exceeding budget targets and expectations year after year. We seek a highly skilled and motivated team player to join the extended team/family of staff, board members, students and volunteers to help take us to the next level of successful donor engagement.

Key Responsibilities:
Fundraising Campaign Management:
Collaborate with executive management to articulate a vision and develop project plans that execute on that vision, including executing two comprehensive annual fund campaigns per year that involve coordinating emails, direct mail, social media, and calling.
Facilitate the recruitment of volunteer callers and directly train and manage volunteers and staff members for the duration of these campaigns.
Develop and execute project plans for segment or restricted gift campaigns.
Develop a project plan for training and energizing student fundraisers around two major student-led crowd-funding campaigns during the academic year.
Events Management:

Collaborate with executive management to articulate a fundraising events strategy and develop project plans to execute on that strategy.
Collaborate with executive management and alumni to develop goals and project plans for alumni outreach events, including happy hours and political debate watch parties.
Oversee and execute events, including coordinating marketing and outreach strategies, sourcing and managing vendors and consultants, and managing budgets and timelines.
Manage the guest experience, including coordinating reminder and thank you emails.

Departmental support and management:
Partner closely with the Chief Development Officer to craft the vision, plans and calendars necessary to exceed goals and maximize near- and long-term growth opportunities.
Support the CDO in reporting on development budgets, including expenses, revenue and goals.
Manage vendors used by the department and liaise with IT, finance and program departments.
Oversees development department day-to-day operations in supervising the development-related duties of Student Services Coordinator, who has day-to-day responsibility for gift entry, acknowledgment communications and data upkeep.
Support the Chief Development Officer’s management of the grants cycle

Donor Cultivation and Solicitation:
Retain and grow a portfolio of donors who contribute <$1,000 annually, cultivating and soliciting this portfolio throughout the year.
Support the Chief Development Officer’s outreach to major donors, including identifying candidates for moves management, and supporting the major gifts strategy and tactics.
Execute on a comprehensive stewardship program that acknowledges the investment of recurring donors, major donors, new donors, and other key segments.
Manage schedules for publishing and distributing cultivation materials, including the annual report, blog posts, and social media.
Strategically schedule and send surveys to alumni, new graduates and parents, collecting current contact information and testimonials.
Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree
3+ years of prior work experience in fund development with substantial experience and a record of success
Significant experience executing donor stewardship best practices
Demonstrated proficiency in marketing, messaging and communications
Experience working with top-level management, including board directors
Experience in a customer service environment
Experience in event planning, publicity and execution
Experience with CRM databases (Salesforce preferred)
Experience negotiating and managing contracts, including with vendors and hotels/event spaces
Experience with online marketing software, such as ExactTarget, MailChimp, or Constant Contact
Valid drivers license

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
Excellent project management skills
Strong management skills, including training and managing volunteers
Ability to develop budgets and comprehend financial information and implications to the bottom line
Proficiency with HTML, especially in a WordPress environment
Proficiency with the Adobe Creative Suite
Ability to handle sensitive materials and information with diplomacy, thoughtfulness and confidentiality
Sense of humor, high emotional IQ, team player
Working Conditions and Travel

Well-lit, modern, comfortable office setting in Burlingame, California. Convenient access to 101, shuttle service to Burlingame CalTrain and Milbrae BART. Occasional option to work-from-home, depending on departmental needs. Facilities include shower and locker room, workout room and access to miles of adjacent bay trails. Convenient covered free parking. Position requires occasional travel outside of the bay area a few times a year for event execution and, as needed, exposure to the organization’s student-run programs.
