Director of Communications – San Francisco – Episcopal Diocese of California

The Episcopal Diocese of California seeks an organized, creative, and energetic Working Group Head for Communications. This position is a member of a small team that supports a large network of congregations, schools, and other organizations and requires the ability to work closely with others on frequently tight schedules. The Working Group Head for Communications will be supervised by the Bishop of California with extremely close collaboration with the Development Director, particularly on the ongoing capital campaign, as well as collaborating with other working group heads and members of staff. The Working Group Head for Communications is at the nexus of a variety of networks and is tasked with network building and storytelling.

Primary responsibilities:
Develop and implement effective communications and public relations campaigns for diocesan programs and events.
Coordinate with the Communications Associate to develop and implement internal communications.
Support and, as requested, represent the bishop in public communication regarding the diocese, The Episcopal Church, and public issues.
Assure that diocesan staff and leaders are provided with tools and training in effective communication regarding key/emerging issues as well as the mission and ministry of the Diocese of California.
Support the communications needs of diocesan staff/departments.
Participate in the planning, design, preparation for, and production of the annual Diocesan Convention.
Develop and oversee collaborative communications programs with congregations and diocesan organizations.
Serve as spokesperson for the Diocese of California, including on-air TV and radio interviews and other media requests.
Create, coordinate, and support a network of communicators — organized regionally — throughout the Diocese of California.
Collaborate with the Disaster Preparedness team to prepare for disasters across the diocese as well as build mission opportunities using the diocesan asset map.
Assist the diocesan innovators group in creating new projects, particularly utilizing Asset Based Community Development, a way to map, track, and share information about local services, projects, and ministries.
Build networks of ministry programs for sharing narratives and best practices.
Report to the diocese and The Episcopal Church the work of the people of the diocese using text, photos, and multimedia opportunities.

Essential Skills and qualifications
Collegial working style with and sensitivity to internal and external clients as well as the general public.
Excellent organizational skills including the ability to set priorities with measurable goals, communicate results in a timely manner, and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
Demonstrated experience in managing a team including supervision, hiring, performance evaluation, and team-building. This position supervises the Communications Associate and frequent interns.
Demonstrated ability to develop and manage a department budget, including sourcing and supervising vendors.
Advanced writing skills
Demonstrated capabilities in journalism, public relations, advocacy, and/or communications.
Marketing familiarity / background a plus
Working knowledge of website CMS management, graphic design software, social media, and webinar/video production.
Ability and willingness to be flexible about working schedule and hours including weekends and Sundays.
Capability to become familiar with the structure and functioning of The Episcopal Church and Diocese of California.
Bi-lingual Spanish preferred, but not necessary
Development / fundraising familiarity a plus
Occasional national and international travel for conferences, networking, and the triennial General Convention
