About The Jewish Community Foundation
The Jewish Community Foundation (Foundation) partners with individuals, families and community organizations to help them achieve their philanthropic goals. During fiscal year 2014-15, JCF awarded and facilitated over $100 million in 6,000 grants to more than 1,500 Jewish and general organizations in San Diego, Israel and around the world. As a leading resource for philanthropy in San Diego, the Foundation manages approximately $300 million in assets and has facilitated over $1 billion in grants since 1967. The JCF is a national model for its legacy endowment building and youth philanthropy programs.

Position Overview
The Director of Philanthropy is a full-time, exempt position that reports to the Foundation’s President and CEO. The Director of Philanthropyis a lead position, responsible for developing, sustaining and expanding relationships with current and new donors and community partners.S/he will direct efforts in generating and securing charitable gifts, build trust and ensure donor satisfaction with Foundation services and programs. S/he will also oversee expanding and diversifying the Foundation’s donor base, build an active pipeline of prospective donors, strengthen the organization’s capacity and secure endowment funds. The position will also oversee the Foundation’s college scholarship and youth philanthropy programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Business Development; Donor Relations; Program Management; Governance; Community Leadership

Business Development
Lead efforts in identifying, cultivating, soliciting and managing a portfolio of donors in order to secure all types of including endowments.
Oversee a strong database of donor prospects focusing on growth diversification.
Design innovative outreach opportunities to connect to all segments of the community.
Keep informed of developments in philanthropy and charitable gift planning.
Plan and implement donor cultivation events.
Complete other activities as directed to grow the Foundation’s asset base.

Donor Relations
Manage a portfolio of donors, actively engaging with them throughout the year.
Create and support customized giving plans, including multi-year gift agreements.
Conduct donor-related research projects, including due-diligence on grants and community issues. Present findings in written and/or oral formats to donors.
Develop and implement educational programs, including site visits to increase donor awareness of important and emerging community needs, both Jewish and secular.
Program Management

Oversee youth foundation and scholarship programs. Manage private foundation consulting arrangements.

Governance
Provide staff leadership for several committees.
As needed, work with committee chairs to develop meeting agenda and materials.
Attend Board meetings and support overall meeting preparation efforts.

Community Leadership
Maintain a high professional profile in the field of philanthropy by participating in events, seminars and conferences designed to strengthen and promote the field and the Foundation.
Attend programs to remain informed about the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors.
Represent the Foundation at community events, grantee events, and on community committees.
Collaborate with other grantmakers and nonprofit organizations, as appropriate. Provide technical assistance to nonprofits, including guidance in fundraising, planning, organizational development, program design, and volunteer leadership development.

Desired Skills and Experience
At least 7 years of professional development experience; demonstrated success in managing and forging relationships and closing major gifts.
Bachelor’s degree required, graduate degree preferred. Strong knowledge of the San Diego nonprofit community, both Jewish and secular, as well as its grantmaking landscape.
Background in planned giving techniques.
Familiarity with various fund types including endowments.
Knowledge of best practices in philanthropic program design and educational events.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal; the ability to create compelling presentations and to engage in meaningful conversations with a wide range of donors.
The ability to form visionary strategies to help donors achieve their philanthropic goals.
Creative, entrepreneurial approach to development. Strong organizational and an adaptable personal style.
High degree of energy and a passion for nonprofit work.
Foundation experience, particularly community or Jewish communal foundations.
