About us: The It Gets Better Project (“IGBP”) strives to uplift and empower lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (“LGBT”) youth across the globe by sharing personal stories of hope and resilience, and inspiring the changes needed to make it better for them. IGBP’s programs involve the production of entertainment content and coordination with a wide range of media outlets to collect and share the stories of the LGBT community. These stories offer important messages of hope to LGBT youth while also changing the hearts and minds of those who can become LGBT allies. The media operation also feeds a growing international network of partners that, with technical and financial support from IGBP, are able to create new programs and services for LGBT youth in countries around the world.
Position summary: The Executive Director provides professional leadership to the IGBP staff and is responsible for the implementation of IGBP’s mission through: board/volunteer development, staff management and training, community engagement, and overall strategic planning. This individual will cultivate partnerships and alliances that will promote growth and awareness, both within and outside the LGBT community. The Executive Director is responsible for development activities, including events, individual and foundation gifts, workplace giving and other national and international activities.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Board/Volunteer Development
Work with the Board in developing, recruiting and motivating its members
Create working committees as well as provide leadership and guidance to committees
Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with board members, volunteers and donors
Maintain positive relationships with community organizations that provide services relevant to and/or that advocate on behalf of LGBT youth, with government organizations, and with influential LGBT leaders
Development/Fundraising
Develop and execute fundraising techniques to meet revenue targets through special events, individual and foundation gifts, third party events, corporate sponsorships, workplace giving and other activities
Identify and pursue major gift prospects
Implement the cultivation, solicitation, follow-up and recognition process for individual, corporate and foundation participation and donations
Maintain accurate and complete records and files for fundraising events, programs and activities
Communications
Working with staff, deepen and refine all aspects of communications—from a refreshed web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand for fundraising and programmatic efforts
Serve as the compelling and credible representative of and spokesperson for the organization
Leadership
Recruit, hire, train, and oversee all organizational staff, including interns
Offer advice and assistance to staff and encourage camaraderie in the work environment
Provide leadership to staff by encouraging creativity, facilitating communication and supporting programmatic efforts
Administration
Initiate and manage the development of a strategic plan for short and long-term goals
Direct administration of financials, budget and operational plans; evaluate income activities and develop appropriate strategies to ensure income stability and growth
Oversee human resources functions
Work Environment
This position is located in Los Angeles, California
Some travel is required, including during weeknights and weekends; this position requires the individual to sometimes be out of the office and in the community, with the possibility of international travel
Qualifications required:
BA/BS degree; relevant graduate education preferred
Strong cultural competency about the LGBT community and LGBT youth
Five to seven years in non-profit management, with a minimum of three years in a supervisory capacity
Demonstrated track record of successful fundraising experience that includes special events, corporate/foundation giving, donor cultivation, public relations and stewardship
Proven and applicable skills in strategic thinking and organizational leadership
Proficiency in fiscal management, with an ability to leverage relationships and negotiate agreements
Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning
Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
Knowledge of digital marketing strategies (including supporting analytics)
Proficiency in MS Office, major social media platforms, and donor management tools
