Family Worker – New York – Harlem Children’s Zone

Harlem Children’s Zone, Inc (HCZ) is a multi-site, multi-program community organization that works to enhance the quality of life for children and families in some of New York City’s most devastated neighborhoods. Harlem Children’s Zone’s 21 centers serve more than 17,000 children and adults every year, including over 10,000 at-risk children. The emphasis of HCZ’s work is not just on education, social service and recreation, but on rebuilding the very fabric of community life. HCZ is primarily known for early and progressive intervention and has been called “one of the most ambitious social-policy experiments of our time” by the New York Times (2004).

Position Summary:
Promise Academy Middle School is seeking a Family Worker. Promise Academy Middle School is committed to proving one thing: every child can achieve their potential. Promise Academy children and their families get the best of everything: great instruction, healthy food, free health services and an array of after-school programming. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for the mission of Promise Academy and HCZ, an understanding and respect for the culture of all residents of Harlem, experience in a school setting and a love of children. It is our goal to provide these residents with both a range of information and the supports necessary to raise happy and healthy children who enter school ready to learn.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Conducts, records and monitors student attendance daily

Informs school staff and families of student absences daily

Maintains accurate student records in the school’s database such as ATS and Infinite Campus

Conducts home visits in regards to student absences and lateness when needed

Deals with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism

Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualification, Skills and Knowledge Requirements:
Excellent Communication Skills.
Knowledge of ATS software a plus
Deals with families in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
Ability to work some evening and weekend hours.
Must have a high School Diploma or GED.
Bi-lingual applicants are encouraged to apply.
Familiar with Harlem Community and locations where parents are connected.
Energetic and able to do heavy walking.
