Forest Program Director – Sustainable Northwest – Portland, OR

The Forest Program Director has a primary responsibility for defining and advancing Sustainable Northwest’s vision for federal forest restoration and management, and rural economic development across the Pacific Northwest. The director works to develop and implement strategies to promote this vision through a collaborative process that increases the meaningful involvement of diverse stakeholders. The director actively identifies, implements, and manages the implementation of methods, tools, partnerships, and opportunities to increase the effectiveness of the Forest Program. Through the Forest Program, the director implements Sustainable Northwest’s vision for a thriving Northwest.

Organizational duties
– Develops, updates, and implements strategic program direction, annual work plans and budgets, and leads exploration into new project opportunities
– Coordinates hiring, and manages staff, interns, and contractors to implement the work plan for the Forest Program
– Fundraises for the Forest Program and the organization by working with the president and development director to identify potential funders, communicate with foundation program officers and individual donors, write grant proposals and reports, and enter information in Salesforce
– Manages all financial aspects of the Forest Program, including development and management of the annual program budget ($300,000+ annually), grant management, and submission and tracking of program-related invoices and expenses
– Participates in all staff, development, program, strategic planning, and other organizational meetings and events as assigned by the president

Programmatic duties
– Serves as Sustainable Northwest’s lead staffer, strategist, and planner for the Forest Program
– Oversees all capacity-building and technical assistance support provided to partners as part of the Forest Program
– Provides direct technical assistance to forest collaboratives including meeting facilitation and organizational development
– Conducts shuttle diplomacy with diverse stakeholders at multiple scales to increase common ground agreement on forest restoration of national forests or related issues
– Works with the U.S. Forest Service regional office(s) and forest-level staff to enhance their ability to achieve forest health and socio-economic goals across the region
– Manages several networks of collaborative groups across the Northwest to share lessons learned, increase knowledge, and enhance the effectiveness of collaborative forest management
– Maintains strong, trusting, and effective relationships with a broad diversity of SNW partners, including conservation groups, timber companies, logging contractors, tribes, state and federal agency personnel, and elected officials and staff
– Represents Sustainable Northwest in public and private settings, including conferences, partnerships, and meetings with foundation staff, private donors, and government decision-makers
– Provide regular updates and reports to the director of programs, president, and board of directors as needed

Qualifications
– Bachelor’s degree in forest resources or related fields; master’s degree preferred
– Minimum of 5 years work experience in the natural resources field
– Knowledge of ecological forest restoration, forest management practices, national forest and other federal land policies and regulations, program and project management, collaborative processes, organizational development, and training
– Demonstrated ability to work in complex, potentially high-conflict, multi-dimensional arenas including effective work with a broad array of organizations, individuals, personalities, and interests
– Experience working with stakeholders in rural areas and contexts
