Fuel Your Future AmeriCorps Member – Seattle – United Way of King County

Help end childhood hunger with United Way’s Fuel Your Future program!

United Way of King County is seeking 20 entrepreneurial, energetic, problem solvers to commit to a year of service with our Fuel Your Future (FYF) program. As an FYF member, you will transform schools into nutrition hubs where students have greater access to school meals, students receive strong nutrition education, and no kid is hungry.

The Program and the Impact:
The Fuel Your Future program is a nationally-recognized, innovative program that reduces hunger by helping low-income families access existing school meals and federal resources. In King County, only 30% of students eat school breakfast but through Fuel Your Future, breakfast participation skyrockets to 70% or higher. This is done through changing school culture and implementing best practices like Breakfast After the Bell in schools. Beyond breakfast, the Fuel Your Future program has ambitious goals of serving one million summer meals, teaching 2,500 students nutrition education, and serving afterschool super snacks to over 10,000 students.

Your Role and What You Will Learn:
As an FYF AmeriCorps, you and a partner will be placed in a high-need school in King County and transform it (and the surrounding community) into a nutrition hub. Your work will include:

Making the case for Breakfast After the Bell to the school
Planning and implementing Breakfast After the Bell in the school – thinking through how it impacts all stakeholders and problem-solving these barriers
Establishing or expanding a super snack program
Teaching nutrition education curricula to students
Supporting and expand summer meals sites
Hosting school family nights focused on nutrition
Promoting SNAP and other public benefits in the community

Through your term of service, you will become an expert on issues of childhood hunger, school nutrition programs, and anti-hunger resources available to the community. Along with this, United Way will provide professional development trainings on leadership, safety, public speaking, and other valuable topics.

Your Team:
As an FYF AmeriCorps member, you will be joining a cohort of 20 members all placed in schools. You will be supported by a dedicated team at United Way that will provide you with tools and resources needed to succeed. As a part of the broader Financial Stability team at United Way, you will be connected to and learn alongside 140+ other United Way AmeriCorps members fighting poverty in our community.
