Oldways is a nonprofit food and nutrition education organization whose mission is to inspire healthy eating through cultural food traditions and lifestyles. We advocate for the healthful pleasures of real food and are well known for creating the Whole Grain Stamp and the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid, among other nutrition initiatives.
We’re seeking a Program Manager for the Whole Grain Stamp Program, a crucial part of the Oldways Whole Grains Council. Our black-and-gold Whole Grain Stamp is now on more than 11,000 products in 55 countries, so this is your chance to be involved with work that’s having a major global impact.
Working as part of a team of three, the Stamp Program Manager is in charge of daily operations and management of the Whole Grain Stamp program, and of Member Relationships for the Whole Grains Council, along with general involvement in other activities of the organization. Responsibilities include:
Keeping the Stamp Program vibrant and strong
Reviewing all submitted products for approval of the Whole Grain Stamp within scheduled 2-week timeframe; answering questions about Stamp use, whole grain content calculations, product registrations
Monitoring the Stamp database and maintaining its accuracy; generating periodic reports on Stamp growth and product trends
Tracking effectiveness and impact of the Stamp Program and identifying opportunities for systematic changes to increase its effectiveness
Establishing and maintaining a positive working relationship with the 400 member companies who help fund our work
Fielding questions from member companies about anything related to whole grains or about making the most of their WGC membership – overall, making them glad they support our work
Member account maintenance: Tracking accounts receivable; working with the Finance Manager to draft overdue notices and membership renewal letters; processing membership cancellations or mergers and acquisitions between members
Processing new memberships; generating invoices; drafting and controlling Stamp Agreements, Membership Certificates and Authorization Letters; researching the market for potential new members and proactively recruiting them.
General Responsibilities
Answering questions from consumers on Stamp related or whole grain specific topics, or referring them to our dietitian, as appropriate
Brainstorming creative ideas for promotional program events during Whole Grains Month (September) and Whole Grain Sampling Day (March) and aiding in their preparation and execution; helping facilitate Oldways and Whole Grain Conferences as needed
Contributing to Whole Grains Council and Oldways blogs regularly; updating the WGC website to keep it vibrant and interesting
Providing assistance to the Program Director, Director of Food and Nutrition Strategies & President as needed
The right person for this job will be both detail oriented (much of the job is routine database work) and creative (we want you involved with other parts of Oldways and the WGC too). We’re open to any combination of eclectic experience you may have, since it’s unlikely you’ve help a job exactly like this one! The following skills would be very useful:
People skills / good customer service attitude: patience, listening, resourcefulness, attention to detail, and a love of building relationships
Computer literacy: familiarity with Macs, Word, Excel, and Constant Contact
Basic understanding of percentages and simple math
Strong demonstrated written and oral communications skills
Database management experience (all the systems are set up – you just need to keep them running smoothly)
Ability to work both independently and productively with small internal teams
Self-motivated and proactive, organized and results-oriented, with an entrepreneurial mindset
Ability to look strategically at the big picture and search for insightful, creative solutions
We’re a non-profit, so we probably can’t pay you as much as all your great skills might command in the private sector. (If money’s your main motivator, Oldways probably isn’t the right fit for you.) On the other hand, our workplace is much more caring and flexible than your typical corporation, and you’ll be working with a team that’s committed to changing the food scene for the better, across the US and around the world!
This position is full-time. Our offices in Boston’s Back Bay are informal. We don’t wear ties or heels, and there’s a company dog. Yet the atmosphere is intense and totally professional; each staff member is expected to take full responsibility for his or her projects. And, like every member of the Oldways team, you’ll also have the chance to be involved in other parts of our business, such as writing for the Oldways blog, helping with conferences, and more.
