Position Summary
The Human Resource Director is responsible for overall administration, coordination and evaluation of the human resources function at the American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA). This position is responsible for developing and implementing Human Resource programs and functions while advocating positive employee relations and best practices in support of organizational growth and strategic initiatives. The incumbent is also charged with ensuring compliance with federal and state employment-related laws, developing and delivering creative, cost-effective human resources solutions in support of the organization’s strategic business plan, culture and core values.
Position Duties and Responsibilities
Develops and administers various human resources plans and procedures for all ABTA personnel.
Maintains knowledge of industry trends and employment legislation and ensure’s ABTA’s compliance.
Assists with facilities management to guarantee a safe and secure working environment and maintains compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) standards.
Works closely with the Chief Operating Officer to develop a risk management plan and proactively implements policies and necessary controls to ensure compliance and to mitigate potential risks.
Supports a human capital development and coaching culture within the ABTA, oversees the HR function including employee relations, talent development, talent acquisition, compensation and benefits, and performance evaluation.
Manages and maintains ABTA insurance policies including workers’ compensation, medical and dental, business liability, etc.
Administers the ABTA’s employee benefits program, explaining programs and responding to employee questions relating to medical and dental insurance, cafeteria plan, and retirement plan. Prepares annual employee benefit statements, and manages annual contract renewals and open enrollment activities and processing.
Manages employee relations, plans ABTA staff events, training, and special meetings.
Works with the Chief Operating Officer on annually reviewing and improving company policies, procedures, and practices on personnel matters. Writes and develops company policies, as required, and communicates changes to personnel policies and procedures to employees to ensure compliance.
Works closely with the Director of National Volunteer Services to develop and maintain a centralized process for the recruitment, training, evaluation, and retention of volunteer talent.
Provides, evaluates, and monitors training and development opportunities for employees to meet the needs of the organization. Conducts onboarding of all new employees, including the coordination of computer training.
Develops training and development plans for all employees and manages progress.
Manages the performance review process, providing appropriate documentation, training, and instructions to management (with continuous improvement of the process). Works closely with the Chief Operating Officer on administrating performance evaluations, promotions, merit increases, retirement plans, staff and volunteer recognition programs and total compensation statements.
Works with organization’s senior management to define staffing plans, recruit qualified employees, and manage recruitment budget.
Maintains current knowledge and understanding of regulations, nonprofit trends, current best practices, new developments, and applicable laws regarding human resources management.
Consults with legal counsel as appropriate, to address personnel matters.
Supervises the Office / Administrative Assistant.
Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned at any time.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) in business management, human resource management, industrial relations, or related field.
Must have 8 to 10 years of broad-based HR experience, with considerable business operations experience.
Must have current PHR / SPHR certification.
Exceptional interpersonal skills: friendly, tactful and a good negotiator with the ability to influence others.
Demonstrated strategic planning and visioning experience in a nonprofit environment, with budgetary experience and contracts management oversight.
Ability to effectively build organization and staff capacity, including developing a top-notch workforce and processes that ensure organizational effectiveness.
Ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment.
Ability to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, Board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters.
Ability to anticipate future trends and incorporate them into the organizational plan.
Ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities and objectives.
Ability to function as a dependable leader and team player.
Knowledge of office equipment and physical plan maintenance.

Ability to travel up to up to 5% and work some evenings and weekends for professional meetings and nation-wide community events.
High proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, E-technologies and Web analytics.
