Position Description Summary:
The Community Services Liaison for Seniors will have the unique opportunity to support DOROT’s Friendly Visiting and Partners in Caring efforts, which both provide case assistance and support to isolated and homebound seniors. This includes assessing seniors and interviewing volunteers for DOROT program participation. For Friendly Visiting, which involves matching volunteers with seniors for weekly home visits in Manhattan, this social worker will maintain ongoing contact with matched seniors and volunteers and support their relationships as they grow and change. The required volunteer commitment is one year, but many of these relationships last much longer. For Partners in Caring, this social worker will collaborate with synagogue staff, lay leaders, seniors and volunteers associated with DOROT’s nine partner synagogues (in Manhattan) to create elder-friendly communities and work to connect senior congregants to DOROT services. Additionally, s/he will provide support for certain holidays or Jewish customs.
The ideal candidate will be personally motivated and committed to supporting older adults. S/he will have strong clinical experience, relevant experience working with the senior community and a proven track record working both independently and as part of a team.
Overall Responsibilities:
Perform in-home assessments and reassessments of older adults
Provide targeted case assistance to older adults, caregivers, volunteers and other collaterals
Provide information, referral and advocacy to DOROT constituents
Represent DOROT at community outreach meetings, conferences, and network with local agencies/organizations
Work collaboratively with the Director of Evaluation, in conjunction with Department Directors, to analyze program/project impact, identify gaps and develop recommendations for program improvement
Collect, track and maintain participation data and related client interactions using DOROT’s online database (CIMS); this involves routine data entry and review of monthly statistics for internal use and reports to funders
Provide support to and participate in DOROT’s community-wide intergenerational volunteer programs
Supervise interns and students as appropriate
Special projects as assigned by Director
Friendly Visiting Responsibilities:
Recruit, screen, interview, and orient volunteers for the program
Support a caseload of seniors and volunteers matched for weekly and occasional visiting
Provide direct social service to senior clients and assist with problem solving
Facilitate professional educational trainings and groups
Partners in Caring Responsibilities:
Provide support to partnering PIC synagogues and their congregants in collaboration with the current PIC social worker and independently over time
Maintain contact with synagogues through e-mail, phone, and attendance at various committee meetings and events (including but not limited to: lunch and learns, bikkur cholim meetings, social action committee meetings and board meetings)
Visit partnering PIC synagogues on a rotating basis (approximately once per month) on Friday night or Saturday to speak briefly about DOROT’s services and expand its visibility
Facilitate a caregiver support group
Coordinate and facilitate educational seminars/workshops
Required Qualifications:
LMSW required; SIFI certified preferred
Professional social work experience working with an elderly population
A passion, warmth and sensitivity for DOROT’s mission along with a deep understanding of Jewish values and the community
Familiarity and comfort with the inner workings of synagogues in the different movements and synagogue community life
Strong interpersonal, clinical, group facilitation, organizational and presentation skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Comfort with visiting seniors in their homes
Availability to attend occasional evening and weekend events, sometimes during Shabbat
Knowledge of community resources a plus
Experience working with volunteers a plus
Proficiency with Microsoft Office 2010 and Excel
