Male Summer Camp Assistant Program Director – Steve’s Camp at Horizon Farms – Livingston Manor, NY

About Steve’s Camp:

Steve’s Camp at Horizon Farms empowers young people to develop healthy bodies, hearts, and minds. Our summer camp program is the cornerstone of our work with youth. At camp, participants recruited from underserved New York City high schools spend twelve days living on a beautiful working farm in the Catskills – free of charge. Campers learn about healthy living and sustainable food systems, and develop leadership and collaboration skills.

About this position:

Steve’s Camp at Horizon Farms seeks an energetic, socially conscious man to serve as Assistant Program Director for two summer camp sessions for teen girls. The Assistant Program Director’s key responsibility will be designing and leading programming for Counselors-in-Training focused on developing leadership skills, as well as planning for life after high school. The Assistant Program Director reports to the Program Director and supervises Counselors and CITs.

Key responsibilities:

Curriculum design and planning:

Collaborate with senior program staff to develop daily professional development mini-workshops for Counselors and CITs in which they can reflect on their leadership at camp and enhance their repertoire of leadership skills
Collaborate with senior program staff to develop a series of workshops specifically for CITs (rising seniors) focused on postsecondary planning

Staff training and supervision:

Collaborate with senior staff to develop two-day staff training that includes an overview of camp curriculum and helps junior staff develop key communication, collaboration, and leadership skills
With support of Program Director, communicate schedules and assignments to junior staff
With support of Program Director, provide feedback and support to junior staff
Communicate and reinforce expectations for camper behavior
Model patience, understanding, compassion, and enthusiasm for staff and campers

Teaching and facilitation:

Lead daily professional development mini-workshops
Lead workshop series focused on postsecondary planning

Requirements:

Extensive experience working with urban youth; experience working in a camp or residential environment preferred
Experience in professional development or training, especially with youth
Excellent leadership and management skills; experience managing, scheduling, and supporting large teams preferred
Passionate about the camp experience; passion for the outdoors and creating opportunities for underserved youth
Willing to work long camp hours

Session dates:

6/27 and 6/28: Staff training in New York City
6/30 – 7/12: Boys Session 1, plus prep day
7/14 – 7/27: Boys Session 2, plus prep and break-down day

Compensation:

$3,000 for curriculum development, training, and sessions listed above

This is a temporary, residential, full-time position. Housing and food is provided.
