Title: Part Time Community Organizer (#NoMoPlomo Exide Campaign)

About Organization:
East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice (EYCEJ) is an environmental health and justice non-profit organization working towards a safe and healthy environment for communities that are disproportionately suffering negative impacts of industrial pollution. EYCEJ works to achieve environmental justice in Los Angeles County through the following approach:

Base Building – to build a base of active community members and leaders to be self-advocates and build community power to reach self-determination among those severely affected by industrial pollution

Policy Change – to change policy and influencing land-use decisions, swaying public opinion and implementing advanced technology to pursue sustainable development projects that are health protective and environmental justice focused

Movement Building- to work in collaboration with all stakeholders and influencers to build a local, statewide, national and global movement for environmental health and justice

About Position:
Objective: to build community power among local leaders through individual and group leadership development trainings, workshops, and direct-action with the purpose of outreaching and registering community members for soil contamination testing (possible soil contamination as a result of lead emission from Exide Technologies in the City of Vernon).

Salary: EYCEJ has a flat pay structure with all full-time employees receiving $43,250.00 annual salary. This position will receive an hourly rate of $20.79 to match the flat pay structure.

Hours: It is expected that the community organizer will work 20 hours a week, with additional hours available depending on need. Weekends and frequent evening hours are required due to the focus on community outreach. Weekly work schedule to be agreed upon with the Lead Organizer. This is a temporary position ending on June 30, 2016 with the potential for an additional term.

Job Duties:
Outreach and Organizing
Organize a strategic Soil Testing Registration drive with a goal of 500 home access agreements for a determined area.
Coordinate weekly door-knocking efforts with community core leaders
Conduct weekly outreach in places where the community congregates
Coordinate monthly full weekend registration efforts with larger community participation in a determined neighborhood (“Door-Knocking Blast”)
Develop relationships with churches, social service agencies, schools, parks, government officials, business organizations, media, etc. based in and serving our community to identify ways of collaborating that will push an environmental justice agenda and Soil Testing Registration drive forward
Inform and update residents on cleanup effort progress and campaign
Maintain consistent communication with active core members
Mobilize EYCEJ members for cleanup campaign efforts

Plan community events that connect neighbors, allow community members to get to know one another, and share environmental justice concerns and solutions, with the goals of building community and increasing soil testing registration.
Administration
Create flyers and promotional materials for the program.
Help to maintain the database of contacts and resources.
Work with Lead Organizer to ensure that work plan is successful.

Preferred Qualifications:
Bilingual (Spanish/English)
Excellent written and oral communication in both Spanish and English
Community Organizing experience with demonstrated results
Experience in door-to-door outreach efforts
Good computer and administrative skills
Meeting facilitation & presentation experience
Knowledge of local environmental justice issues
Ability to work with diverse groups of people
