About the Organization
Today, there are approximately 42,000 human beings locked up in a hodgepodge of for-profit prisons and municipal jails as part of the U.S. immigration detention system. While 46% of migrants are transferred at least twice away from family and friends, 84% lack attorneys. Many are denied adequate medical care, and human rights abuses have contributed to over 160 reported deaths.

CIVIC’s highly dedicated team works to end U.S. immigration detention by monitoring human rights abuses, elevating stories, building community-based alternatives to detention, and advocating for system change. The heart of our work is community-based volunteers who visit people in detention, building relationships that have the power to change lives and systems. Currently, CIVIC supports a network of over 1400 volunteers visiting at 43 immigration detention facilities through CIVIC-affiliated visitation programs. CIVIC is an award-winning non-profit whose founders have been recognized for their vision and leadership by Ashoka, Echoing Green, and the Rockwood Leadership Institute.
