DESCRIPTION
PROGRAM SUMMARY: Music and the Brain (MATB) was developed by the non-profit 42nd St. Development Corp. in 1997 to provide young public school students with the tools to read and play music with the goal of increasing their overall cognitive ability and skills.
Inspired by neurological research linking music and cognitive development, Music and the Brain is the experience of what research is telling us: music literacy has a significant effect on the way our brains develop and function. When young children receive sequential music instruction it impacts their proficiency in language, reading, math and cognition.
The MATB program operates in public school classrooms and includes ongoing teacher training, piano books, keyboard equipment, audio and video recordings, rhythm and keyboard cards, theory papers, and teaching manuals. This 3 level sequential curriculum was designed for success in all levels (particularly K-5). There are currently over 170 public schools across New York City and in New Orleans (LA), Newark (NJ) Ferguson (MS), Miami (FL) and other cities across the country and beyond.
