Project Coordinator, Trails Forever – Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy – San Francisco, CA

The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy is the nonprofit support partner of the Golden Gate National Parks—84,000 acres of national parkland throughout the Bay Area, including Muir Woods, Ocean Beach, Crissy Field, and Alcatraz. The Parks Conservancy is a membership organization created to preserve the Golden Gate National Parks, enhance the experiences of park visitors, and build a community dedicated to conserving the parks for the future. Park projects and programs include the Crissy Field Center, the promoting of leadership and environmental justice training for youth; the Native Plant Nurseries, which grows over 100,000 plants annually to restore habitat; Trails Forever, which is at work building and rehabilitating miles of trails throughout the parks; and volunteer programs that inspire 35,000 people annually to take action in support the parks.

Position Overview

The Project Coordinator is responsible for managing and supporting planning, design and construction projects undertaken by the Projects & Stewardship department. The duties are diverse and require a flexible individual that can manage several projects at one time. The Project Coordinator must have an understanding of project management; have knowledge of work flow and compliance associated with a planning, engineering, design and/or construction project; and express an interest in planning and design for a dynamic urban national park.

In addition to working with Conservancy staff, the Project Coordinator will perform work with staff at the National Park Service, Presidio Trust, the Golden Gate Bridge and Highway Transportation District, California State Parks, Marin Municipal Water District, and Marin County Open Space District.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Prepare and manage scopes, schedule and budgets for a diverse portfolio of projects, to include trail construction and maintenance; trailheads and associated visitor facilities; overlooks; trail and trailhead signage; natural and cultural resource enhancement and protection
Maintain project files; ensure clear documentation of meetings and decision making
Research and assemble background data for projects, to include base maps, site history, site inventory and analysis, case studies
Prepare graphics and other presentation materials for meetings; facilitate meetings and presentations for project compliance and design review
Prepare graphics and documents for project compliance, permitting and reporting, to include environmental and cultural resource analysis and documentation
Manage compliance and design process, to include contract development and management of multi discipline project consultants
Oversee preparation of construction documents, to include design drawings and specifications
Support Trails Forever initiative programmatic aspects, to include development of standard design details, product and materials research

Preparation of documents for RFQs and RFPs
Construction administration, to include contract management, maintaining document logs and close-out

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

An undergraduate degree in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, environmental science or related field
Strong skills with programs including AutoCad, ArcGIS and the Adobe Suite
Ability to read construction drawing sets, plan elevation and three dimensions
Experience with construction documents, to include specifications
Experience with basic ecological principles
Experience managing budgets, schedules, consultants and contracts
Current driver’s license, clean driving record
Self-starter and adept at initiating
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work in a fast paced environment
Experience and enthusiasm for working in a park setting
Flexible; willing to adjust to changing timeframes and expectations
Problem solving; identifies and resolves problems efficiently and effectively; works well with others to solve complex issues

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

Work is performed both in an office and outdoors
Regularly sits at a computer station and operates electronic equipment 6-8 hours per day
Work requires walking, hiking, squatting and kneeling
Frequently lifts, carries and positions objects weighing up to 30 pounds
Primary office is at Fort Mason, San Francisco
